Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh answers Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Govt of India The main library of the university, established in 1960, named after Maulana Azad, caters to all the postgraduate, professional undergraduate students, boys and girls. This is besides the departmental libraries, also called ‘seminar library’, some of these wonderfully rich. There are also book banks, reading rooms, and coaching guidance cells in each hall of residence for the students, both boys and girls. In addition to that the residential coaching academy and its library are another co-education spot. The Women’s College imparts undergraduate programmes in conventional, non-professional courses. Anywhere in India, the students of affiliated colleges are not given access to the main library of the university. This is true of the colleges of Delhi university as well. Obviously, therefore, there has not ever been any feminist protest from Miranda House or Indraprastha College against the ...
AMU library row: Allahabad High Court sends notice to V-C The Allahabad High Court on Friday issued a notice to the Aligarh Muslim University over reports of the university denying a section of students access to its central library. Calling it a case of gender-based bias, the court also issued a notice to Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah, who had remarked earlier this week that granting access to undergraduate girls would invite "four time more boys" to the Maulana Azad Library. The case will be next heard on November 24. The High Court order came amid reports of the university bowing down to massive pressure and informing the Human Resource Development Ministry that a request by the Women's College students to access the central library is under consideration. HRD Minister Smriti Irani had called the Vice-Chancellor's remark an insult to women. The row began on Monday when Gen Shah turned down a demand from students of Women's College for access to the university's Maulana Azad Library, saying t ...

Science Wars: The Saffron Villains If one examines the cold facts, the Sangh Parivar’s contribution to science in India is remarkably secular. It’s time to expose the malicious left wing propaganda. No, this is neither from some left wing propaganda pamphlet, nor from an academic tome by a ‘South Asia scholar’ from some ivory league university in the United States studying Hindu ‘right wing’ politics in India. This is from a travelogue written by Tim Mackintosh-Smith, British Yemen-based Oxford-educated Arabist, writer, traveler and lecturer. The Hall of A Thousand Columns is a travelogue in which Smith follows the footsteps of Ibn Batutta, 14th century Muslim traveler in India. The above passage is when Smith comes to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and meets historian Prof. Irfan Habib. The extract provides the kind of negative caricature that the left wing indulged in and the outside world bought with glee. The fact that even a travelogue contains such a visceral critique and negative caric ...

After seeing the film, he complimented Naseeruddin Shah as an actor and ranked him among-st the top ten actors in the world. Naseeruddin Shah won the Best Actor’s Award at the same festival for his realistic portrayal of a working class member from Bihar, who is compelled to take shelter in Kolkata along with his wife (played by Shabana Azmi), after their village is wrecked by tyrant zamindars. No other Indian actor has received the same award at Venice. It has been 35 years since Naseeruddin Shah entered the acting arena. After completing his graduation from Aligarh Muslim University and his acting courses from FTII and NSD, Naseeruddin Shah brought in a rare dignity to acting in Hindi films. HERE IS SO CALLED GRAND MUFTI FOR U!!!"" In the Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir, despite the fact there is no legal basis and neither the public or religious scholars have elected him, “Grand Mufti” Bashir-ud-Din has been running a self- styled parallel judicial system, calling it the “Supreme Court of Islamic Shariet (Central Dar ul Futwa).” In mid 70s, Bashir-ud-din, with a post graduate degree in Arabic from the Aligarh Muslim University, was appointed “Grand Mufti” by late Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed, the state’s last Prime Minister in 1960 but recently the government mildly denied Bashir-ud-Din having any alliance with the government. For decades he has been giving diktats from his court and has used it for his personal interests to raise huge funds, solve land disputes, demand money for fatwas, and also to threaten people or force them to do his work. In an exclusive exposé, the official letters and the documents obtained by THE KASHMIR WALLA prove that the Bashir-ud-Din has been misus ...

Repository of old Delhi’s wisdom fights for survival Amin Ali Last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar wrote poetry in Punjabi, too, and had his works published at Royal Press situated inside Red Fort in 1855. A mathematics professor of Benaras College John Thompson had his A Hindustani-English Dictionary published in 1881 and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, known as the brain behind Aligarh Muslim University had written A'thar-as-Sanadid (Great Monuments) documenting historical places of Delhi in 1854. AMU research scholar selected for $1,20,000 scholarship ERAM AGHA,TNN | ALIGARH: In February 2002, when 15-year-old Sheth Zulfiqar Mohmad Yusuf peeped out from the window of his house in Himmatnagar in Gujarat, he saw two communities baying for each other's blood. "That incident didn't take my life or my property but it attacked my sense of belonging and identity. The riots emboldened my resolve to rise above the circumstances," he said. Today, this research scholar in economics from Aligarh Muslim University whose experience of staying in a relief camp prompted him to research what is now known as the 'Gujarat growth model', has got a scholarship worth a whopping 120,000 USD (Rs 74.28 lakh) from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Recalling his early days, the madarsa-schooled researcher said his family shifted to a relief camp in Gujarat because "we wanted to stay with the community." "The feeling of mistrust and fear had seeped in so much that there was no escaping from it. We found safety in numbers ...

SIGNS OF THE TIMES Muffled apologies for 'mistakes' against minorities By Humra Quraishi " BJP chief Rajnath Singh sounds like a typical bluff master when he quips that he and his party are sorry for the 'mistakes' committed against the Muslims. A bluff which is so horribly crude that one should not waste a second harping on it. This time there is little use of masks and related ploys this political outfit uses for deception. In fact, as I'm keying in I'm reminded of what the former DGP of Gujarat, RB Sreekumar, had told me during the course of an interview - 'In several of its rallies, the BJP uses Muslim symbols - burqas, skull caps, prayer beads - with the intention of falsely showing Muslim presence !' Moving ahead, the election scenario seems moving ahead along the expected lines. The so called leaders running here and there, trying to grab votes. Mulayam Singh Yadav cancels his visit to Aligarh Muslim University after protests by teachers and students on campus.
AMU students and staff against Mulayam Singh Yadav's visit to AMU Students staged protest and teachers called complete boycott and protest against his visit Memorandum by students, To Registrar, Aligarh Muslim University We the students at Aligarh Muslim University are shocked by the news of the proposed visit of Mulayam Singh Yadav, patron of the ruling party at UP, India to AMU on 24 Feb 2014. He and his party played a direct role in large scale massacre of innocent Muslims at Muzafarnagar, wherein more than 100 people were killed, thousands were displayed from their shelters and later their relief camps were bulldozed. AMU stood with victims by donating Sir Syed day dinner, by sending a dozen of relief teams to the effected area and by leading a massive campaign against communal riots. It’s ridiculous to know that Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav, the person who is responsible for the killing of 100 of innocents life in Muzaffarnagar and also for the rape incident in UP is coming to Aligarh Muslim University. I strongly condemn his visit and also to the Vice Chancellor who has permitted him in Kennedy. To protest it I am bycotting his visit & warning Mr. Shah if he do not cancel his Kennedy Auditorium programme we the Alig fraternity across the globe may cancel our visit in the ALUMNI HOME COMING WEEK in the University. In view Kalyan Singh and Mulayam Singh are the face of same coins. I request all alumni of AMU and also to the students that these people shouldn’t be allowed to the university campus. The decision was taken in an emergent meeting of the Executive Committee of Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ association (AMUTA) held on Feb 21, 2014. The teachers’ body has appealed all its members to completely boycott the programme to register their protest against his visit. Dr. Aftab Alam, Hony. Secretary of AMUTA said that the Samajwadi Party Govt. in UP failed to respond swiftly when the news of communal violence broke out and remained a mute spectator and abandoned its duty to provide security and protection to people during the communal carnage. India's position in world education: The inaugural Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2014 have highlighted China’s ‘utter dominance’ in the higher education sector. Though India is nowhere near its neighbour, 10 of its institutes figure in the top 100 list, which was published Tuesday after analysing institutes from 22 countries. China has claimed four of the top 10 slots, and 23 of the top 100. The country’s Peking University leads the rankings and Tshingua University is second. Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, has notched up 21 slots. The Indian tally is led by Chandigarh’s Panjab University, which has claimed the thirteenth place, ahead of six IITs that stand between No. 30 and No. 47. A high citation record is seen as the reason behind PU’s success. Other Indian institutes on the list are Jadavpur University (No. 47), Aligarh Muslim University (No. 50) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (No. 57). Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings, told ...

EMPTY PROMISES OF THE CONGRESS - Famous historian Prof Irfan Habib of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has questionied the demand for the varsity's minority character. His statement is reportedly challenged by some pro-minority intellectuals. Some have demanded his sacking from the AMU. Strangely, the AMU students union alleges that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had herself assured the university students of minority status during her convocation address. Now, the Congress is keeping silent. WHO IS Sonia Gandhi TO COMMIT THE MINORITY STATUS TO AMU. SHE HAS THE EXTRA-CONSTITUTIONAL STATUS. Strangely, no one spells out the tangible benefits that would be derived if the minority status is granted. How could the educational institution demand minority status in a secular country ? The moot point remains : Whether the AMU could retain its Central universiity status along with minority status ? I think, not. A K SAXENA ( A retired civil servant) www.aksaxena.co.in

When Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru visited Aligarh Muslim University, he enquired the students and authorities about their college song or something like it. Having got no concrete answer, he expressed his surprise by saying, "It is very strange that a prestigious university as AMU doesn't have its own college song. " These remarks put a student to unrest and he spent a restless night on this idea. The very next morning, he was ready with a masterpiece which went on to be reckoned as AMU Tarana after being sung at the Strachey Hall for the first time. Dr Mohammad Sajjad teaches at the Aligarh Muslim University. Armed with a PhD on Muslim politics in Bihar in the last decade of colonialism, he keeps his eye on Uttar Pradesh and Bihar politics. The conversation delved around Muslims's voting patterns and their state of mind in the two northern states on the eve of the general election. Asked about the mood in Uttar Pradesh, "Muslims are shocked after the Samajwadi Party took (former Bharatiya Janata Party chief minister) Kalyan Singh's support. Many Muslims are angry with the SP -- that one factor will shift many Muslim votes to the BSP."The situation is so negative, he adds, that the SP candidate from Aligarh, Dr Zafar Alam, a respected Muslim businessman, will find it difficult to win. Mainly because Kalyan Singh recently told the media that he had helped Dr Alam get the SP ticket. Some votes from AMU could also go to Congress candidate Bijendra Singh. Interestingly, the division of Muslim votes may help Sheela Gautam, the BJP's Brahmin candidate. She ...

""Senior"" and""Junior"", these three words more or less carried almost maximum cultural and traditional responsibility of Aligarh Muslim University since last centrury. But now it seems flowing towardsdownfall. Many times observed when interacting withnew generation of Alig fraternity, they ask our identity. Their common questions are who are you? where are you came from? I donno you brother? Canyou explain about you some? Its a hammering on the name of ""Alig"". I dont know when this developed, but surely the root cause is "" Ban on tradtional Introduction"", which was our cultural heritage and a transforming mechanism of a raw material into a well shaped, updated, culturally equiped and transformed into the mould of ""Junior"" by our ""Seniors"" as an asset of the Qaum which start to work after few sessions like their decessars with the most prestigious prefix of all the time ""Alig"". And our ""senior"" were ""Myammar"" of our future dreams. In the other hand if we analyse about our responsibillity as ...
Jan Lok Pal Bill or Hijacking of Indian Democracy 14 NOV General Education Centre of the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh held a very timely and meaningful symposium on “Democracy and Jan Lok Pal” which has sent an awareness wave in the campus on the much talked about issue. A galaxy of eminent persons from diverse fields dwelled upon the ticklish subject which is going to be affected not only Indian Parliamentary system but also lives of a large section of Indian citizenry. Addressing the symposium, the Group Editor of Rashtriya Sahara, Aziz Burney strongly questioned the credibility of Anna Hazare and his civil society and dwelled upon multi-faceted corruption. He questioned why concentrate only on the financial corruption and why ignore political and philosophical corruptions? He asked why Anna Hazare is keeping deadly silence on the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who has turned down the whole Indian democratic system to make Gujarat a testing State for Hindu Rashtra? Burney went ahead to p ...

Asrar-ul-Haq Majaz - A Journey of Love, Hope and Nationalism THE year was 1935. The union hall of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was brimming with students and the atmosphere was electric. A young man in sherwani stands up. He runs his hand through his long locks, and recites his poem 'Inquilab' in his own inimitable style - "KohsaaroN ki taraf se surkh aandhi aayegi Ja-baja aabaadiyoN meiN aag si lag jaayegi Aur is rang-e-shafaq meiN ba-hazaraaN aab-o taab Jagmagaaega watan ki hurriyat ka aaftaab" [A red storm is approaching from over the mountains Sparking a fire in the settlements And on this horizon, amidst a thousand tumults Shall shine the sun of our land’s freedom] The hall reverberates with a thunderous applause. Asrar-ul-Haq Majaz was destined for greatness! The poetic journey Majaz poetry first made its mark in the culturally alive AMU during the early 1930s. His poems 'Noora' and 'Nazr-e-Aligarh' established him as a popular poet. The girls just loved him. "NahiN jaanti hai, mera naam tak wo ...
I strongly condemn the communal abuse on a muslim student in Banaras Hindu University by his fellow student.I am deeply pained and shocked by this discrimination,as i am a former student of the Aligarh Muslim University and most of my fellow students were followers of different religions but we never let them feel insecure and different from us.we showed them brotherhood and strictly followed the great secular face of this country.I feel students should follow humanity relgion after their respective religions. After all this we should ashamed of such type of discrimination spreading around us.Is this the same secular nation of which GANDHI,NEHRU,AZAD,SHASHTRI dreamt of?? .

Power cuts at the university are really irritating and disgusting. i don`t know what exactly is the problem. this is the time of the year when exams are going on and the students want it the most, but the administration is doing just the opposite. our VC in a statement said that overload is the main problem, but why? The university recently got some 100 crore bucks, where is that amount to be invested? I am 100% sure that they won`t spend it on anything, but will take interest from it. why they are not purchasing new machinery and generators? If Mr. VC wants the students to progress and develop, then he should first provide basic necessities to them. In the hostels, there are no rooms, furniture, for students: Bathrooms are so dirty and have become the storehouses of mosquitoes. If we look at the food provided in the Mess, it is awful and the mess charges are so high. every time a student has to pay RS. 200-300 in addition to mess charges for food and everytime the administration makes lame excuses that i ...
