French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius confirmed that a French security worker employed by the EU mission in Yemen had been killed and that another was seriously wounded. Westerners have frequently been attacked in Yemen, an impoverished US-allied country fighting qn Islamist insurgency, a secessionist movement in the south and a Shiite Muslim rebellion in the north. Al Qaeda-linked militants have repeatedly attacked government officials and military installations over the past two years. The insurgents were emboldened by a decline in government control over the country during protests that eventually ousted longtime leader Ali Abdullah Saleh. They seized several southern cities before being driven out themselves in 2012. Al Qaeda militants have killed hundreds of Yemeni soldiers and members of the security forces in a series of attacks since an ongoing offensive " which the United States has supported with intelligence and drones " drove them out of their strongholds. The security sources said the gunmen, who had been driving a four-by-four car without license plates, blocked the vehicle the French man was in and opened fire. The U.S. ally is trying to overcome nearly three years of political turmoil which began when protests erupted in 2011 against President Ali Abdullah Saleh's 33 years in office. Read More...
Army kills 43 Qaeda suspects in south Yemen: Ministry Aden: The army today killed 43 Al-Qaeda suspects, mainly foreigners, and wounded dozens of others on day six of a major offensive in southern Yemen, military officials said. Most of the "terrorists" were killed in Shabwa province during the ongoing operation against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the defence ministry said in text messages sent to journalists. "The majority of those killed or wounded are Saudis, Afghans, Somalis, Chechens and others," the official Saba news agency quoted a military source as saying. On Friday, soldiers backed by warplanes killed five suspected Al-Qaeda militants in the same province. Residents there told AFP today of "exceptionally" heavy artillery fire and air raids targeting Al-Qaeda hideouts in the region. Saba quoted General Ahmed al-Yafie, commander of the Third Military Region, as saying the armed forces were "unprecedentedly ready to face this terrorist organisation." "The Al-Qaeda elements will not es ...
Latest News. Yemeni army in heavy fighting; six soldiers die in suicide blast Reuters - 2 hrs ago By Mohammed Mukhashaf ADEN, Yemen (Reuters) - Yemen said at least 37 Al Qaeda militants were killed in the southern province of Shabwa on Sunday as the army intensified an offensive to root out foreign and local Islamist fighters holed up in some of the country's most impenetrable areas. The report by state news agency Saba came shortly after a military source told Reuters a suicide bomber killed six soldiers by their outpost in Shabwa, one of two provinces where the army has been fighting Al Qaeda and its allies. The source, speaking from the battlefront, also told Reuters that 20 soldiers were wounded in the bombing. The number of attacks against the army and security forces in the south has risen sharply since Yemen's U.S.-backed army launched its anti-Al Qaeda offensive last week. The Arab Spring was a series of protests and uprisings in the Middle East that began with unrest in Tunisia in late 2010. The Arab Spring has brought down regimes in some Arab countries, sparked mass violence in others, while some governments managed to delay the trouble with a mix of repression, promise of reform and state largesse. SITE: Qaeda claims deadly attack on Yemen army HQ Al-Qaeda has claimed an attack on a Yemeni army headquarters in a tightly secured district of Aden in which 20 people died, most of them militants, a monitoring group said Thursday. The building targeted in Wednesday’s attack is located in the heavily patrolled coastal district of Tawahi that hosts intelligence and political police headquarters, a naval base and a presidential residence. The al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) affiliate of the global jihadist network claimed the attack in an online message, said the U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors extremist organizations. AQAP, which the United States views as al-Qaeda’s most dangerous branch, said the attack killed “nearly 50 soldiers” and was part of its campaign to “target the joint operation rooms that manage the U.S. drones in the country.” Washington has stepped up drone strikes in Yemen against the group in recent months. NYR | OPED | Did the Youth Revolution achieve their Demands?? In February 2011, as the country was living a total political deadlock, Ali Abdullah Saleh - President back then - saw the waves of spring approaching his shores. With the world cameras trade on Egypt and Tunisia, the President rushed to Parliament announcing some reforms hoping as all authoritarians "Yemen is Not Egypt nor Tunisia". Only a few days past, and like magic the spring swept through the streets of Taiz, to Aden, to Sanaa, to each and every corner in the country, announcing for the first time a full scale revolution driven by the public and inspired by the youth. The Saleh's family have ruled for over 30 years, with a complex mixture of tribal and military power forming a class of elites who have absolute control of wealth and power. People were angry about the theft of public wealth like selling the Harbour of Aden to DP World - the harbour which was known to be one of the most famous. But American policy elites' professed surprise was primarily a function of their own self-imposed amnesia and delusion. No one in Washington seemed to realise or care that Egyptians forced their pro-American dictator from power on February 11, 2011 - 32 years to the day after the Shah of Iran's military conceded t ...

Yemen : - Yemen to become six-region federation Presidential panel agrees to transform the country into "federal state of six regions", state news agency reports. The final approval on creating a "federal state of six regions" came at a meeting of the panel, headed by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and including representatives of Yemen's main parties, Saba said on Monday. Hadi formed the committee in late January at the end of a "national dialogue" to decide on the number of regions, and to insert it into the text of a new constitution, to be drafted and voted on within a year. The six agreed regions include four in the north - Azal, Saba, Janad and Tahama - and two in the south, Aden and Hadramawt. The southeastern Hadramawt province would include al-Mahra, Shebwa and the island of Socotra, while Saba comprises Bayda, Marib, and Al-Jawf. Azal would include the provinces of Dhamar, Amran and Saada, a rebel stronghold, while Aden would comprise the capital of the former south, as well as Abyan, Lahej an ...
Yemen to become federation of six regions Yemen is to become a federation of six regions as part of its political transition, state media report. Final approval was given by a committee chaired by President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi following two weeks of talks with delegates from across the country. The federal structure should be enshrined in a new constitution that must be put to a referendum. The move is intended to end the complaints against centralisation that fed rebellions in the north and south. Yemen has also been struggling to deal with the unrest sparked by a 2011 popular uprising that forced long-time President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down, and an insurgency by Islamist militants allied to al-Qaeda. As Yemen is further sinking into chaos with fresh reports of violence in all four corners of the impoverished nation, it is once again the Houthis – a Shiite group organized under the leadership of Sheikh Abdel-Malek Al Houthi – which have grabbed media attention. Their stronghold located in the northern Yemeni province of Sa’ada, the Houthis first came together in 1994 as a reaction to former President Ali Abdullah Salehs’ political and military alliance with Saudi Arabia. Faced with a growing insurgency movement in the south and the prospect of a civil war back in 1994, only four years into Yemen’s unification deal, former President Saleh had to turn to Riyadh for help. Keen to assert its hold over Yemen, Saudi Arabia was quick to provide Sana’a with military and financial support, in exchange for Saleh’s political allegiance. From that moment on, Yemen, a country which for centuries had managed to ward off nefarious influences, either political or religious, found itself over-run by Saudi ...

A security official said that the kidnappers are demanding the release of two members of a tribe in Marib, who were arrested in a military hospital in Sanaa four months ago. A Yemeni government spokesman said efforts were underway to release the hostages. "A crackdown is taking place now at the locations of the kidnappers in order to release the German hostage," Rajeh Badi said. "We will not give in to their demands because it will open the door for endless kidnapping attempts." The other officials spoke anonymously as they were not allowed to talk to the media. Abductions are frequent in Yemen, an impoverished nation where armed tribesmen and al-Qaeda-linked militants take hostages in an effo ...

AFP NOVEMBER 1, 2013 Nobel laureate gives prize money to Yemen revolt victims Yemeni activist Tawakkol Karman said Friday she has donated her prize money as a 2011 Nobel Peace laureate to a fund for families of those killed in Yemen's uprising. The donation has gone to the "Aid Fund for Families of Martyrs and Wounded in the [2011] Revolution," set up by President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, she said. Hadi, quoted by state news agency Saba, paid tribute to "this humanitarian gesture" and Karman's "loyalty" to the revolt, which led to the February 2012 ouster of his predecessor, longtime strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh. "This is a duty to the youths who sacrificed for change and to build a Yemen founded on freedom, justice, equality and good governance," Karman said, referring to the youth-driven revolt in which hundreds were killed in clashes with security forces. "The sum is small but symbolic," said Karman, who shared prize money of around one million euros with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Gbowee, ...
Murad Sobay, who downplays comparisons with Banksy, stencils faces of vanished political prisoners to keep their memory aliveAbubakr al-Shamahi in Sana'a theguardian.com, Thursday 31 October 2013 07.00 GMT Peering out from one of the perimeter walls of Sana'a University is a young man's face, stencilled in black and white paint. Daubed next to him is his name and the year he disappeared. A metre on is another face, and then another, and then another, stretching along the whole perimeter of the wall.   The faces belong to Yemeni political prisoners who simply vanished, leaving behind families who have little or no knowledge of their fate. Some go as far back as the 1970s and some date to the Yemeni revolution against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2011.   They are part of a campaign called The Walls Remember Their Faces, the brainchild of a 26-year-old street artist, Murad Sobay.   "The meaning of the word 'wall' has changed. A wall was a prison, a barrier – now a wall is a way of expressing y ...

Yemen’s Mirage: Between democratic rituals and the Brink Fernando Carvajal “The transition process began with [president Abdo Rabo Mansour] Hadi, he should see it through”, said Mr. Lutfi Jaffer Shattara when asked if his faction participating in the National Dialogue Conference (NDC) would agree with a possible extension of President Hadi’s term in office. As the Dialogue conference, which began March 18th, nears its second month reality begins to set in among observers and ordinary Yemenis concerning the timeline inscribed in the transition agreement known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Initiative signed on 23 November 2011. In the document, signatories agreed to a two-year transition period after President Ali Abdullah Saleh transferred power to then Vice-President Abdo Rabo Mansour Hadi. The Dialogue conference was set for six months, followed by a referendum on .. ...
Yemen has been embroiled in a morass of political instability, humanitarian crises and lawlessness since protests against former leader Ali Abdullah Saleh began in early 2011. And while Saleh was successfully relegated to a bit role in Yemeni politics, Yemen’s woes seem to grow worse. This week, the...
This inflammatory letter is filled with obvious false hoods. Let’s start with the most glaring: “ the regime targeted this boy despite the fact he had absolutely no connection to terrorism whatsoever.” Actually, he was connected to terrorism and he almost certainly wasn’t “targeted,” if by targeted, you mean on the kill list. What this is really about. A populist uprising Yemen demanding the ouster of President/Dictator for 33 years Ali Abdullah Saleh provided opportunity for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, and American drone increased as the government has lost ground to Islamist militants. Abdulrahman al-Awlaki’s father, Anwar al-Awlaki, was a high-ranking Al Queda propagandist, reliably linked to numerous terrorist attacks against US targets including attacks on US soil. The Administration considered him a legal target a drone strike because he was actively engaged in the on-going war against the US and arresting him in his was not considered feasible. There has been controversy attach ...
Wars & Rumors of Wars: Let's See. The Revived Roman Empire(EU,Israel, US, Vatican) has knocked off, Saddam Hussein of Iraq, Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, Ben Ali of Tunisia, Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen, King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa of Bahrain, Mohamar Gaddafi of Libya, and now Hugo Chavez of Ven. They are working on the overthrow of Syria, Lebanon, Mauritania, Algeria, Jordan, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Iran working with Arab allies Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and UAE. Once they have completed this, they will be working in the South Pacific to start problems with China, and the South Pacific Asia region. They have the western Hemisphere controlled by the American Colony, and have marginalized the trouble maker countries of Korea and Vietnam by dividing the countries, which is what they are doing in Sudan. Once the Roman Empire can control the Oil, then they will set their sights on Jerusalem, and making it the international Capital through the Vatican, which they have already begun. We are almost ready for the Edo . ...
The Psychology of Dictatorship: Why “Dictator” Clings to Power Muammar Gaddafi continued to hold tightly to power even as NATO bombs rained down on Tripoli. Syrian autocrat Bashar al-Assad has killed more than 70,000 of his own people in an effort to quash protests. In Iran, Khamenei has killed, tortured, and imprisoned hundreds of Iranian people to hold his “Supereme” dictatorship. In Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh had refused to step down despite months of unrest that has intensified into near civil war. The question is, why do all these guys fight so hard to keep power? Why not decamp to Russia, China, Saudi Arabia or Venezuela and live out their lives in luxury before being killed or held for trial like Hosni Mubarak? Any attempt to diagnose a defining psychological feature of dictatorship would be facile. But in the public record available on many of them, Stalin and Mao, Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi himself, one can begin to see patterns that shape a dictatorial personality. At least since the Offi ...

The people have no idea about Gaddafi's death, Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh and Syria's Bashar al-Assad
Yemen has one more year to save itself from collapse Yemen has a history of lopsided elections. Under former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, 90 per cent blowouts and fraud-riddled votes were the norm. In one of the more egregious examples, Mr Saleh's opponent even announced that he too would be voting for the incumbent. But until last year, Yemenis had always had a choice. Even if it was just "yes" or "no". In February 2012, Mr Saleh's long-serving vice president, Abdrabu Mansur Hadi, took over the presidency in a process capped by a strange referendum-like vote, in which Yemenis were confronted with a single name and only the "yes" box. The one-man election was the result of an international deal put together by the US, the UN and regional GCC countries. Most Yemenis seemed happy to finally have a president who wasn't Mr Saleh, but they were less pleased with the immunity clause, which the international community believed was necessary to convince Mr Saleh to step down and to avoid a Syrian-style civil war ...

AZAAD In the 22nd Annual Session of Arab League which was conducted on 27th March 2010, Ali Abdullah Saleh, the current president of Yemen, stressed on the idea of the establishment of an Arab Union. A five member committee was set up by the participants in order to analyze all the possible aspects in this concern. In its report, this committee will analyze the practicality of this proposal by discussing it in a special session of foreign ministers. The secretary general of the Arab League, Omar Musa, suggested a multi-dimensional spread of the forum. Furthermore, he also invited other Muslim nations to join, especially Iran and Turkey. Although this idea could not gather much support, but discussions on this suggestion have formally been initiated. Many countries of the Persian-Gulf are also keeping their eyes on the emerging growth of Iran. Internal situation of the Arabs is such that Iraq and Syria are currently in a conflict over the issue of Kurds with Turkey. America has settled here after invading ...
coming Iran-Iraq war/ Arabs must prevent Zionist plan to destabilise region US defence secretary Leon Panetta signed a document at the end of 2011 ending the war in Iraq. However, there was no jubilation in Iraq after the departure of the last US tank. One reason could be that after the US invasion and Saddam Hussein’s ouster, Iraq came under the control of Iran. What Washington did was actually hand over the keys of Iraq to Iran on a gold plate, and another chapter of Iranian domination over Iraq started, and became complete with the ascension to power of Nouri Al Maliki as prime minister. In two years of Arab Spring, the pace of political developments in the region has been dizzying. Several regimes crumbled. But despite the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, Ben Ali, Muammar Gaddafi and Ali Abdullah Saleh, Syrian President Bashar Al Assad has been able to cling to power despite a continuing revolution. The reason for this is Iranian support, which has helped the regime to resist a revolution of close to two ...

The loss of subservient dictators in the region such as Tunisian Zein El Abidin Bin Ali, Egyptian Hosni Mubarak, Libyan Muammar Gaddafi, and Yemeni Ali Abdullah Saleh has prompted the West to launch and back the opposition movement in Syria, Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami said. These are Islamic leader who just want to serve non Muslims interest to endanger their people own right only their selfish desire to ever remain in power but not the serve Islam interests.

Unlike Egypt’s ousted dictator, Hosni Mubarak, who was sentenced to life in prison on June 2, and unlike Libya’s Muammar Ghaddafi, who was killed at the hand of anti-government rebels, Assad would “transfer power and depart Syria.” That’s how U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton put it after a meeting of foreign ministers of Arab and Western nations in Istanbul. That idea is known as the Yemeni Solution and was floated by U.S. President Barack Obama at a meeting of the Group of Eight in May. It refers to a deal under which Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was granted immunity from prosecution for the killing of protesters. In return, he handed power over to his deputy and announced he planned to go into exile in Ethiopia.
