Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has joined the ranks of those admitting that Nigeria's military has been overwhelmed by Boko Haram and has conceded that the country needs international assistance to arrest the situation. Over the last week, Boko Haram insurgents easily overran Mubi, Adamawa State's second city, with the Nigerian Army troops stationed there fleeing without putting up any resistance. Over 300 of these soldiers fled into Cameroon, allowing Boko Haram to march triumphantly into Mubi and take control of its s huge army garrison. This has been a feature of Boko Haram attacks over recent months as it has captured large swathes of territory across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. Nigerian Army troops have simply lacked the willingness to fight and their morale is at such a low that they flee for dear life whenever they hear the insurgents are coming. FORMER president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has visited his son Adeboye and other military victims of a recent Boko Haram attack in Adamawa State in Jos where they are receiving treatment. Last week, Lt Col Adeboye Obasanjo, an army engineer with the Third Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos, Plateau State was injured when his convoy ran into a Boko Haram convoy. His platoon had been sent to engage with Boko Haram militants at Baza in Adamawa State as the Nigerian Army mounted a counter-offensive to reclaim some of the territory seized by the insurgents lately. Lt Col Obasanjo was initially taken to a local hospital in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, where he was visited by his father's Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar among others.
