Some Great Players Who Failed As Managers - 1) Alan Shearer The all-time leading Premier League goalscorer and one of the finest strikers to grace the English game, Alan Shearer was a legend for club and country in a superb playing career, but had a bad time in charge of Newcastle United as he ended up getting his old club relegated in 2008/09. 2) Gianfranco Zola A brilliantly entertaining player in a wonderful career with Chelsea and Serie A clubs, Italian maestro Gianfranco Zola has not hit the ground running in managament, looking out of his depth first at West Ham United and then at Watford. He will inevitably be linked with the Chelsea job at some point though... 3) Edgar Davids One of the finest defensive midfielders of his generation, Juventus and Holland legend Edgar Davids could not take his superb ability on the pitch to working miracles off it, despite a bizarre attempt at being player-coach of Barnet recently, which mostly resulted in him charging into wreckless tackles on the pitch and gettin ...

Manchester City were still full of errors despite their victory over Aston Villa, according to BBC Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer. "They played well in the last 10 minutes but their performance was full of errors and mistakes," Shearer said. "I think they felt they just had to turn up and they'd win but that doesn't happen in the Premier League." Yaya Toure scored his first Premier League goal of the season but Shearer said the Ivorian had misplaced too many simple passes during the game. "Toure didn't have the best of games," the Former Newcastle striker said. "But the sign of a good team is that they can produce a piece of magic. "It was a clever, cultured finish by Toure, and Sergio Aguero, who missed an absolute sitter earlier, finished brilliantly for his goal. "It was about winning and getting three points and they did it but I didn't think they played well."
THEATRE RENOVATION It was Old Trafford that did for Manchester United last season. The Red Devils lost seven times on home soil, as many times as relegated Norwich City, and after another reversal on the opening day of the season, to Swansea, Sunday’s match against QPR was must-win for Louis van Gaal. And in a reasonably poetic twist, United scored three times before half-time at home in the league for the first time since that spring night in April 2013 when Robin Van Persie scored a first-half hat-trick and Sir Alex Ferguson won his 13th and final league title wit the club. 17 months on and the new era finally looks like it has arrived, with new signings Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria scoring and Wayne Rooney reaching 175 Premier League goals, a total only Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole can better. The last time United failed to win any of their opening three league games, in 2007-08, they won the fourth match and went onto claim the title.
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has matched Thierry Henry's all-time Premier League goals record with his strike against QPR on Sunday. The England captain picked up the ball from Ander Herrera before cutting inside from the left and beating Rob Green at his near post to give Louis van Gaal's side a 3-0 lead before half-time. Rooney has now scored 175 times in the English Top Flight, the same as Former Arsenal hero Henry. The former Everton forward reached the landmark in 377 appearances, whereas Henry took just 258. Rooney is now joint third in the all-time scoring charts, and needs just 13 more goals to leapfrog Andy Cole into second. But he is still 85 behind former Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer, who notched 260 times in 441 appearances.
SUAREZ REPLIES HOGSON IN STYLE THE LIVERPOOL AND URUGUAY STAR STRIKER NETTED A CRUCIAL DOUBLE TO SILENCE BOTH DOUBTERS AND CRITICS. Luis Suarez has reacted swiftly to Roy Hogson's comment that he (Suarez) "is not yet a great" by not only putting in an eye-catching performance against the England coach's side but also also scoring two fantastic goals which put the Three Lions' chances of advancing to the next round in Brazil in abrupt jeopardy. It would be recalled that Hogson had said earlier this week that the Uruguan should not yet be considered one of the football greats until he is able to prove his worth on a big stage like the on-going FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Suarez was in blistering form during the last Premier League campaign, scoring 31 league goals - the joint highest with those of Alan Shearer and Christiano Ronaldo in a single 38-match campaign- and registering 12 assists in the process. The Liverpool man also scooped the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Award, the Football Writ . ...
Suarez is now (with C. Ronaldo and Alan Shearer) the highest scoring Golden Boot winner in the Premier League; 31 goals.
Zaha has received some real criticism for his performances in recent weeks, and none less than from Alan Shearer, who gave a scathing review of his performance against Sunderland last Sunday on Match of the Day 2. 'I’d be slightly concerned with what I saw from Wilfried Zaha. He had to do more for me when he came on,' said the Former England captain on the BBC show. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leapt to his player's defence, responding: 'Being singled out like that hurts, because I don’t think it’s fair,' said the former United striker. ‘Wilf is a young player; this is the first time he’s in the Premier League. ‘[He’s] come on, 10 men, and he’s ran more than anyone else in that half.' The Norwegian also praised Zaha’s efforts to improve off the pitch. 'My apartment overlooks the training ground and on Thursday, five, six o’clock, he is there again, training, finishing. 'He is just a boy who wants to play football, wants to do his best, wants to improve. I think he will have a very good car ...
Luis Suarez scored his 30th Premier League goal of the season at Norwich City, becoming the first Liverpool player to achieve the feat since Ian Rush in 1987. After giving Liverpool an early lead, Raheem Sterling teed up Suarez to steer home an 11th-minute shot that saw the Uruguayan register his 12th goal in his last five appearances against Norwich. Another goal from Sterling gave Liverpool a 3-2 victory that took them five points clear at the top of the league table with three matches remaining. Suarez is now one goal short of the record goal tally for a 38-game Premier League season, which is jointly held by Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ricky Van Wolfswinkel makes Helder Postiga in the Premier League seem like Alan Shearer, by comparison.
With 29 goals scored, Luis Suarez is closing in on Andy Cole and Alan Shearer's record of 34 goals scored in one Premier League season.
The forward is likely to break Premier League records but his efforts should not overshadow the contributions made by his team-mates to create Brendan Rodgers' "collective" side ANALYSIS By Chris Davie Where would Liverpool be without Luis Suarez? It's a question the club have no need to be concerned with until the summer, at the earliest, but one most cynics have been only too eager answer as the Uruguayan edges his side closer to a first league title in 24 years. Sunderland manager Gus Poyet, whose team were narrowly beaten at Anfield earlier this month, felt Liverpool would not even be Champions League contenders, let alone title frontrunners, if it wasn’t for their leading marksman. "Without Suarez, they would probably be in mid-table," was the 46-year-old's assessment. But is Suarez really carrying the Liverpool's title push by himself? Suarez has scored 29 goals in 29 Premier League matches this season and is only two away from equalling the joint record held by Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo ...
England Posted on April 11, 2014 by john Suarez: Team before Golden Boot(PA) Luis Suarez may be chasing the Premier League’s goalscoring record but he would happily sacrifice a Golden Boot for Champions League football with the Reds. The Uruguay striker, jointly named the Top Flight’s player of the month for March with captain Steven Gerrard, has 29 in 28 matches – having been suspended for five league games at the start of the season. Andy Cole, in 1993-94, and Alan Shearer, in the following season, scored 34 in 40 and 42 games respectively, while the record for a 38-game Premier League campaign is 31 – achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008-09 and Shearer in 1995-96.

Liverpool FC's Luis Suarez needs just 4 goals to break Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan Shearer's Premier League record of 31 goals in a single season (38 games).
Rodgers' Reds are record breakers Brendan Rodgers has been in charge of Liverpool for 68 league games - and they have scored a mammoth 153 goals in that period. That makes the Northern Irishman the quickest LFC manager to get his side to 150 goals in the Top Flight. The fewest ever games to hit 150 league goals in Reds history was 58 under John McKenna, but his charges played in both the old First and Second Divisions during that spell in the 1890s. Yesterday's game also marked the first time in Liverpool's Top Flight history - and only the second time ever - that the club have fired five or more goals in three away matches in the same campaign. Only three Reds have scored more than 20 Premier League goals in a single season - Fowler twice, Torres once and Suarez last term. Now the SAS are set to do it in the same campaign. Suarez's hat-trick today takes his Top Flight tally up to 28 - which matches Robbie Fowler's Premier League record for the Reds and goes some way to threatening Alan Shearer and Andy C ...

Newcastle United Number 9 Shirt Something that initially inspired now appears to have morphed into a crippling load for Papiss Cisse, the Newcastle United number 9 shirt. The shirt that adorns his torso on match days may have the same single digit etched onto it that the great Alan Shearer proudly displayed for a decade, but for the man currently in possession it is a reminder of lofty expectations thus far unfulfilled. From Cole to Cisse, Newcastle United have been blessed with some special number nines. Inevitably with the responsibility and expectation comes an elevation of pressure, my theory is that replacing Papiss as the standard bearer for goal grabbing at the end of this season might actually set him free from the shadows of those former greats. (To feature like Dom, send in your letters/articles for our magazine/website to contributefirst let’s take a look at those who have worn the number nine shirt during the Premier League era and their records in the Top Flight. John Barnes says Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge will never be a 'classic partnership' and expects the Liverpool duo to have plenty more spats in the future. Sturridge struck twice and Suarez once in the 4-0 defeat of rivals Everton on Tuesday night to take the strike duo’s combined tally for the Premier League season to 36 goals. But the pair exchanged angry words late on in the game when Sturridge tried to score a third instead of passing to his well-placed team-mate. And Barnes says they will continue to frustrate each other as, unlike the original SAS of Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, they are too similar to be hailed among the all-time top forward pairings. “They are not going to be a classic partnership because they are very individual," the Anfield legend said, speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. "Yes, every now and again you will see there is a partnership in terms of movement and the passing to each other but, more often than not, all their work is going to be of their own making. ...
will Suarez be able to create history ???.he has already scored 22.place your views guys. "The leading scorers of EPL.." 1993/94 Andy Cole – 34 goals The Newcastle United forward was too much to handle for just about every defence that season which led to Alex Ferguson forking out £7 million for his services the following year. Accused of missing several chances before getting on the score sheet – stats indicated other strikers were in fact guiltier of this than Cole – his deadly partnership with Dwight Yorke during the 1998/99 season was a key part of the Treble winning side. 1994/95 Alan Shearer – 34 goals The first of three years in a row that the England striker sat top of the pile and instrumental in helping Blackburn Rovers land the title. Left to join Newcastle United for £15 million and quickly made that fee look like a bargain as he continued in a similar prolific vein. With 260 goals to his name, Shearer has an incredible 73 to spare over Andy Cole as the top Premier League goal scorer ...

MIDFIELDER - Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) I can't believe what I'm seeing at Arsenal at the moment. Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey can't continue playing like this - it's obscene! If the Welshman carries on in this vein of form, we must take Arsenal's title challenge very seriously regardless of what my Match of the Day colleagues Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy are saying. Did you know? He has six goals and four assists in 10 Premier League appearances this season. Garth Crooks BBC Football Analyst
Lampard’s career statistics are mind-boggling: 800 appearances, 241 goals and 124 assists. Compare this with Steven Gerrard's 159 goals and 100 assists in 629 appearances, and with Xavi's 84 goals and 89 assists in 733 appearances. I could go on and on, and show you stats from numerous other midfielders like Lampard, but the end conclusion is that there is no other Lampard. I will be the first to concede that I have been a Chelsea fan that takes Lampard for granted. I’ve sat there, shook my head at a long shot pulled wide, quipped “this one’s going straight into the wall” when he lines up a free-kick, and criticised his corner taking at times. But when it comes to the impact that a player has on his team, Lampard’s is still invaluable for Chelsea. This season alone Lampard has contributed 13 goals in just 26 appearances for the Blues. He is the only midfield player to score at least 10 goals in 10 different Premier League seasons, and only the second after the great Alan Shearer. Without Lampa ...
Alan Pardew is understood to be keen to get a new deal agreed with Paul Dummett. The Geordie boy’s contract expires at the end of the campaign, although it is believed there have been only preliminary discussions on extending his current contract. United are eager to showcase local Tyneside talent coming through their ranks and Dummett’s progress is the ideal example for their blueprint. Dummett’s performances have not gone unnoticed around the football circuit and Birmingham City, Millwall and Premier League Hull City all have the Welsh under-21 international on their radar. However, the Chronicle understands both United and Dummett are keen to put any talk about his future to bed by agreeing a new deal – with the new contract expected to be announced soon. Dummett’s performance and first Premier League goal drew praise from ex-Toon skipper and England star Alan Shearer over the weekend, who was impressed by the Kenton lad’s left-footed finish against Liverpool. Yet his first goal was missed ...
Andrew Alexander "Andy" Cole (born 15 October 1971 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire) is an English former professional footballer and coach at Huddersfield Town. He was almost universally known as Andy Cole in the 1990s, but in 2000, he allegedly asked to be known as Andrew Cole. As a player, he was a striker from 1988 to 2008. He is most notably remembered for his time in the Premier League, with Manchester United, where he spent six years of his career and winning numerous trophies in the process. He also played in the top division of English football for Arsenal, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth and Sunderland, as well as in the Football League for Bristol City, Birmingham City, Burnley and Nottingham Forest. Since the inception of the English Football League competition, the Premier League,[a] in 1992, more than 100 players have scored three goals (a hat-trick) or more in a single match. The first player to achieve the feat was Frenchman Eric Cantona, who scored three times for Leeds United in a 5–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Twenty players have scored more than three goals in a match; of these, four players, Andrew Cole, Alan Shearer, Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov have scored five. Robbie Fowler holds the record for the quickest Premier League hat-trick, netting three times against Arsenal in 4 minutes 23 seconds,[1] while, in 1999, Manchester United player Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored four goals in twelve minutes as a substitute against Nottingham Forest, "the fastest scorer of a four-goal haul on record in England".[2] The fixture between Arsenal and Southampton at Highbury in 2003 saw both Jermaine Pennant and Robert Pirès score a hat-trick for the home team. In 2007, Blackburn's Roque Santa C ...
Sunderland's decision to sack Paolo Di Canio as manager just five games into the Premier League season has amazed BBC Sport's Alan Shearer. Shows how little Shearer knows-this was nailed on from the start to be a short reign-he is a very dogmatic guy-which works well with a small outfit like Swindon, but not in the Premier league.

The Joe Kinnear era as Newcastle’s Director of Football has started, and while we seem to have missed out on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, one of our dependable if not great players at the club – James Perch, has officially singed for Wigan Athletic. Perch was signed by Chris Hughton from Nottingham Forest in July of 2010 for around £1M, and in his three seasons on Tyneside he made 81 appearances with one goal. James will be a terrific signing for Wigan, and he had this to say on their web-site today: “It feels great to be here with a new challenge ahead of me, and I’m very excited at getting that started,” “The prospect of helping to get the team promoted was really appealing and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the boys and get started.” “I think Wigan Athletic is a great club and after speaking with the manager, his ambition and determination to take the club back to the Premier League where it belongs is something I wanted to be a part of.” It’s important to remember that in March ...

Former England striker Alan Shearer believes the return of Jose Mourinho will add drama to the Premier League title race. "The box office lost its biggest draw when Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of last season. Then along comes Jose Mourinho to fill the void," he said in his Sun column. "While Manchester United under Sir Alex played some fantastic football, he also added a drama to title races off the pitch. "Mourinho will certainly do that. More importantly, he will make Chelsea the team to beat once more."

Top Five Fastest Goals in English Premier League History: Ledley King – 10 seconds The recently retired Spurs and England star often played in midfield at the beginning of his career. Alan Shearer – 10.4 seconds Geordie goal machine Alan Shearer scored plenty of goals for both Blackburn and Newcastle, but this strike against Manchester City in 2003 was his quickest ever, and took just a little longer than King’s. Alan Shearer (born 13 August 1970) is a retired English footballer. He played as a striker in the top level of English league football for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and for the England national team. A native of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Shearer made his professional debut with English top-flight club Southampton in 1988, scoring a hat-trick in the process.

We decided there were 2 choices for No.1 So at Number 1: Ryan Giggs and Alan Shearer Ryan Giggs: In any era Ryan Giggs would stand out as an extraordinary talent – but to perform at the top level for so long in the modern-day game is truly stunning. The only footballer to play in all 20 seasons of the Premier League (he has scored in each), the Welshman is the most decorated player in the English game and still plays a vital role for Manchester United, more than 21 years since his professional debut. Alan Shearer: Simply the greatest scorer in Premier League history by a distance, Alan Shearer averaged more than a goal every other match during his hugely impressive career. His 34 goals in 1994-95 were a key factor as Blackburn Rovers won the title while his subsequent move to Newcastle United saw him quickly establish himself as an icon on Tyneside. Deadly with either foot and with his head, Shearer was a classic centre-forward – and pretty much unstoppable.

Rooney proud to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton's Manchester derby goalscoring record The striker surpassed the United legend on Sunday, while also becoming the sixth man to reach 150 Premier League goals. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed his pride at overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton's record of goals in the Manchester derby, after his double in the 3-2 victory over Manchester City on Sunday took him to 10 goals against the Red Devils' top rival. The 27-year-old scored twice to put Sir Alex Ferguson's men ahead 2-0, before goals from Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta put the three points in doubt, with Robin Van Persie winning the game with a free kick in the dying moments of the match. The prolific forward leapfrogged the Red Devils' club legend to gain the derby record and is now level with Manchester City's Francis Lee and Joe Hayes with the overall record of 10. Remember the name?! Ten years ago exactly, Wayne Rooney scored his first Barclays Premier League goal, the 16-year-old whizzkid coming off the bench to earn Everton a 2-1 win over Arsenal. He's now on 144 Premier League goals: Do you reckon he'll beat Alan Shearer's record of 260?
The Blackburn Rovers managing director, Derek Shaw, has said Alan Shearer has the credentials to be considered for the managerial vacancy at Ewood Park but that his popularity among fans should not be a decisive factor. Reports on ESPN Soccernet quoted an unnamed Blackburn source as claiming the owners, Venky's, "would like to *** the possibilities of Alan Shearer taking the job" following three Championship games without victory under the caretaker manager, Eric Black. Shaw, who said Blackburn have had 20 "good" applications, suggested the recruitment process is not at such an advanced stage and said the 42-year-old Shearer's popularity among a fan-base disgruntled by Steve Kean's troubled tenure should not have a decisive bearing on any decision. "I'm sure it would be a popular appointment but even more than getting fans excited we need a good manager who'll get us to the Premier League and keep us in the Premier League," said Shaw. "Obviously someone with Alan's football record, he'll be on the list .. ...
Barclays Premier League winner Alan Shearer believes the loss of skipper Nemanja Vidic will cost Manchester United the title this season.
Papers: Reds won't win league 01/10/2012 09:37 Alan Shearer writes in The Sun… Losing Vidic will cost United the title It's early days in the title race but already Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow from which they will not recover. Before the season started I did not think they were strong enough to win the title despite all their new signings. With the loss of Nemanja Vidic now for two months I am even more convinced that the Premier League trophy will either be staying put or heading to Stamford Bridge. For me, they are looking a lot more vulnerable now. On Saturday against Tottenham Alex Ferguson’s men were cruelly exposed by the pace of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Kyle Walker. Jonny Evans is a decent defender but he is no Nemanja Vidic. While Rio Ferdinand can still do a job at the top level, he is not the defender he was five years ago. The same can be said of Patrice Evra, whose form continues to nosedive. On the opposite flank I like Rafael going forward. As a pure defender howev ...

Andy Cole is next on 187, followed by Henry on 176. Robbie Fowler is the only other striker with over 150 goals in the Premier League. He has 163. Frank Lampard has 149 which is some total for a mid fielder. Rooney is on 134. RVP had a fantastic season last year scoring 30 league goals. In the previous 7 seasons he has accumulated 66 goals. Olde saying : "One swallow does not make a summer " comes to mind. However - LET THE BATTLE COMMENCE.
