The European Union has "lost its way" in too many areas, the head of the Institute of Directors has warned. Speaking at his organisation's annual convention in London, director-general Simon Walker said his group backed David Cameron's attempts to renegotiate the UK's terms of EU membership. "In too many areas, Europe has lost its way. Its regulatory and legislative output ties up the efforts of small and medium-sized businesses. Efforts which could otherwise be spent on innovation, expansion and investment. "The financial crisis, combined with some very real concerns about the politics of Europe, has presented this country with an opportunity to question the foundations of our EU membership. The IoD would be failing its members if we didn't engage in the debate around Britain's future relations with the EU." Alan Halsall, co-chairman of the pro-EU referendum campaign group Business for Britain, said Walker was right to say Europe has lost its way. The EU Has 'Lost Its Way' Says Institute Of Directors Bos ...

Coronation Street bosses have reportedly handed out huge new contracts to ten of the cast. Michelle Keegan's recent announcement that she will bow out of the soap next year has encouraged producers to keep as many of the cast as possible, The Sun reports. They have given new contracts to stars such as Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw), Kym Lomas (Michelle Connor), Alan Halsall (Tyronne Dobbs), Kate Ford (Tracey Barlow) and Antony Cotton (Sean Tully). Others who have secured new one-year packages are Jimmi Harkishin (Dev Alahan), Sam Aston (Chesney Brown), Mikey North (Gary Windass), Debbie Rush (Anna Windass) and Andy Whyment (Kirk Sutherland). A soap source said: "Corrie's doing brilliantly at the moment and everyone thinks there is a really good balance of actors in the current cast. "But Michelle's decision to leave the show proves just how quickly things can change. That was a real blow and Corrie can ill afford to lose any more actors as popular as her." The source continued: "With that in mind, [producer ...

Coronation Street has scooped eight awards at this year’s BSAs at MediaCityUK in Manchester, while EastEnders took home its lowest ever number of prizes. In an evening dominated by Corrie’s domestic abuse storyline, BBC1 rival EastEnders could only manage a lifetime achievement award for Adam Woodyatt, who has played Walford stalwart Ian Beale since the series began. Natalie Gumede, who portayed the terrifying Kirsty Soames, won both Best Villain and Best Dramatic Performance, while on-screen partner Alan Halsall was rewarded with Best Actor. Co-star Michelle Keegan picked up Sexiest Female for the fifth year in a row, but lost out in the Best Actress category to Claire Cooper from Hollyoaks. Corrie also picked up Best Soap, a viewer-voted category that has been dominated by EastEnders for the past five years. Hollyoaks had an impressive tally of five awards and were singled out for featuring the year’s most spectacular scene – the bus crash that caused chaos at 2012’s double wedding. However, E ...

It has been a storyline which gripped the nation, hapless Tyrone Dobbs being abused by his scheming wife Kirsty until he is forced to flee the cobbles to escape the police. This week Coronation Street audiences will see Tyrone, played by Alan Halsall, arrested by police after lover Fiz Stape, played by Jenny McAlpine, tips off officers. But in a bizarre twist of fate good-natured Tyrone is jailed and forced to prove his innocence as former police officer Kirsty, played Natalie Gumede, accuses him of systematic abuse - despite her character attacking him. Producers have recorded two endings to the Weatherfield mechanic's trial, one which sees Tyrone being cuffed and sent down - the other, his pretty wife, caged for lying to the jury. This week viewers will be shocked as Tyrone goes on the run without his curly haired lover Fiz. But actress McAlpine told her character wants her lover to happy and feels they can't be on the run. 'Fiz has been desperately wanting to help Tyrone, but it leaves Fiz ...
The grandson of late Coronation Street legend Bill Tarmey has landed a cameo on the soap. Matt Piddington will appear on screen next month as a customer in the Rovers Return, fulfilling his promise to Tarmey that he would pursue an acting career. Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth for over three decades, passed away in November last year at the age of 71. Piddington told the Sunday Mirror: "It would have been great if me & Grandad could have been in the Rovers at the same time but I know he was looking down from heaven smiling. I could feel he was with me saying, 'Go on lad I am so proud of you'. I had nerves but they felt like good nerves. I remembered all Grandad's advice, like, 'Less is more' & 'It's all in the eyes'. Antony Cotton came over & said, 'I know you, you're Bill Tarmey's grandson'. He wished me luck & said he hoped to see me back in the Rovers full time." Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs & was a close friend of Tarmey's, helped Piddington secure his role by putting him in touch with ...
Coronation Street's Tyrone Dobbs is sent to prison later this month after his plan to kidnap baby Ruby ends in failure. Upcoming episodes see Tyrone (Alan Halsall) *** his young daughter, before fleeing Weatherfield with girlfriend Fiz Stape and her own child Hope. Tyrone and Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) initially hide out in Wales while they ponder their next move, eventually agreeing that they should get out of the UK as soon as possible. As the troubled pair need help to make this happen, they contact Chesney and ask him to bring them some cash and their passports. Unfortunately, it's not long before the police track down the runaways, and things get even worse for Tyrone as he is arrested on suspicion of child abduction. At the police station, Fiz is released with a caution when Tyrone protects her, insisting that the abduction was all his idea. However, Tyrone isn't so lucky as the authorities reveal that there's now enough evidence to charge him with three counts of assault against his twisted ex-fianc .. ...

ETV Yahoo!▼ Home News Soaps Tarmey remembered at TV awards show Press Association - 19 hrs ago The stars of Coronation Street have remembered Bill Tarmey as they picked up two prizes at the National Television Awards. The long-running ITV soap was named best serial drama and Alan Halsall, who played Tarmey's on-screen foster son Tyrone Dobbs, won the award for serial drama performance. Accepting his award, Halsall paid tribute to Tarmey, who died last year after playing Jack Duckworth in the soap for decades, saying: "I love you pal." Speaking backstage, he paid further tribute to Tarmey, saying the actor would be looking down on him. He said: "I'm sure he is. He'll be having a pint of Guinness for me. His wife asked me to wear his watch tonight so I've got it on. "This is for him, he guided me literally from the start of my career at Coronation Street, he was such a huge, huge influence on my life like a second dad on screen. He'd be laughing at this right now, he used to say, 'none of that bloody acti ...

Alan Halsall has admitted that he is "gutted" over Julie Hesmondhalgh's decision to leave the soap. The Tyrone Dobbs actor said that Hesmondhalgh, who is leaving her role as Hayley Cropper after 15 years, is "loved" by Corrie's cast & crew. "It felt like someone had punched me in the stomach when I found out," he told The Sun. "Julie will be missed by everyone - she's another Bill, she's loved." However, he added positively that Hesmondhalgh has a bright future ahead in the theatre: "I'm excited for Julie because it's her choice but I'm gutted personally." Meanwhile, Halsall confessed that his wife & former Corrie co-star Lucy-Jo Hudson has wept over his domestic abuse scenes with Natalie Gumede. "Lucy cries when she sees me get hit. I get home & she says, 'Are you alright?' She loves Corrie." The star admitted that he has found the Tyrone & Kirsty storyline to be challenging: "It was hard because I've no point of reference. I read case studies & met a chap who suffered from domestic violence & he answere ...

Coronation Street has picked up the most soap nominations on the National Television Awards 2013 shortlist. The Weatherfield drama has secured four nods in total this year, compared to three for EastEnders, three for Hollyoaks and two for Emmerdale. All four soaps will be competing for the hotly-contested 'Serial Drama' prize, and public voting for this category will remain open throughout the live show. This year's 'Serial Drama Performance' category features two Coronation Street stars - Alan Halsall (Tyrone Dobbs) and Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre) - along with EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) and Hollyoaks favourite Emmett J Scanlan (Brendan Brady). Coronation Street's Kirsty Soames continues to keep fiancé Tyrone Dobbs and his secret lover Fiz Stape on their toes in the coming days. Tyrone is currently plotting to marry Kirsty (Natalie Gumede) to finally secure parental rights over their baby daughter Ruby, hoping that he can finally escape his abusive partner after the ceremony. On the night of the stag and hen parties, Tyrone (Alan Halsall) and Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) make their final plans for the big day - agreeing that they'll make a quick getaway with Ruby as soon as the reception starts.
