Singapore Film Society is screening AI WEI WEI: Never Sorry at the Arts House this February on 24th and 28th Feb! "Ai Weiwei is China’s most famous international artist and outspoken activist. In recent years, he has garnered international attention as much for his ambitious artwork as his political provocations. Against a backdrop of strict censorship and an unresponsive legal system, Ai expresses himself and organizes people through art and social media. In response, Chinese authorities have shut down his blog, bulldozed his newly built studio, and detained him without a trial. From 2008 to 2010, Beijing-based journalist and filmmaker Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai Weiwei. Klayman documented Ai's artistic process in preparation for major museum exhibitions, his intimate exchanges with family members and his increasingly public clashes with the Chinese government. Klayman's detailed portrait of the artist provides a nuanced exploration of contemporary China and one of its most compell ...

The first major retrospective of works by the Chinese artist in North America has opened in Washington, DC. "Unfortunately, as we were in the middle of working with Ai Weiwei on the exhibition, he was arrested in China and incarcerated for 81 days," explains Kerry Brougher, chief curator at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Whether chastising the 2008 Beijing Olympics ( which hehelped to build, as a architect) as a "fake smile" to the world or detailing the deadly results of shoddy school construction after the Sichuan earthquake, or meticulously documenting the increasingly aggressive police measures used against him, the encounters between Weiwei and the Communist government seem to be in a constant state of escalation.
Looking forward to Ai Weiwei's first American retrospective at the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C.!

This is a monumental year for movies. 2012 was where the studio films bounced back, and for the first time in recent memory, studio films actually triumphed the independent films in terms of quality and box office lucrativity. This is also a particularly unique year for me, as I have demolished my own record of how many movies I saw in one year. In 2010 I saw 40 films when I made my list, In 2011 I saw 56 movies when I made my list. This year, I have seen 76 movies released in 2012. As a result, I have seen much more than 10 excellent films. In other years, movies from my top 15 would have all made my list. But there are always 10 movies and no more, so this list what I truly believe to be the cream of the crop.     Honorable Mentions:   13. Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry   12. The Intouchables   11.
