PETER FROST salutes Mandela and his comrades who were sentenced by the racist apartheid state 50 years ago June 12 1964, half a century ago today, was one of the darkest days in the history of the liberation struggle in South Africa. It seemed like the forces of racism and reaction were about to achieve their final victory. Ten members of the leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party had finished an eight-month trial and had been handed down long jail sentences. They were Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Denis Goldberg, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada, Raymond Mhlaba, Elias Motsoaledi and Andrew Mlangeni. Two of the accused, Lionel “Rusty” Bernstein and James Kantor, were acquitted. Those in the dock covered the entire spectrum of what would become the South African “rainbow nation.” Goldberg and Bernstein were white Jews, Kathrada was Indian and Mhlaba, Mbeki and Motsoaledi were black from the Xhosa tribe. Sisulu’s mother was Xhosa and his father was Euro ...
"He came to prison with a Std 2. But he got all the education informally from fellow prisoners" ~ Ahmed Kathrada on President Jacob Zuma
The years 1961 to 1964 were years of great circumstances for the politics of South Africa. The Rivonia Trial was one of the most fundamental trials in the history of South Africa, especially the history of political trials and the African National Congress in general. The reason for this, not only was the late Tata Mandela one of the accused and detainees, but so were ten other leaders of the ANC, leaders like Ahmed Kathrada, Goven Mbeki, Dennis Goldberg and Elias Motsoaledi. The significance of this trial comes with great ramifications. Firstly nineteen ANC leaders including the accused were arrested in 1961 at lilies leaf farm. These leaders were the think tanks of the ANC and therefore these arrests were a great blow to the ANC and the ruling apartheid Nationalist Party had the upper hand, and were one step closer as they thought to collapsing the ANC and maintaining the apartheid regime. These leaders were not Africans only, but consisted of all races and all religions, showing that the ANC was diver ...
Did you know? On this day, 11 June 1964 Nelson Mandela & seven others were convicted of sabotage in the Rivonia Trial. Madiba's co-accused were: Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Raymond Mhlaba, Govan Mbeki, Elias Motsoaledi, Denis Goldberg Andrew Mlangeni... What are your thought?
Today, the 11th June marks 50 years since Justice Quartus de Wet delivered his verdict on the remaining 9 accused. And 50 years ago tomorrow he delivered his verdict. Andrew Mlangeni recalls that the defence team, while the prospect of a death sentence hung over the accused, held on to the slim hope that maybe Ahmed Kathrada and Raymond Mhlaba would be acquitted due to insufficient evidence against them, that he and Elias Motsoaledi would receive 12 years each and Denis Goldberg, Govan Mbeki and Rusty Bernstein life imprisonment. The defence team however he remembers thought that Nelson Mandela & Walter Sisulu would both receive the death sentence.

Good Morning Great People & Families…Be realistic on saying or doing things***Yeap, I believe in the simple teachings; Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Let us the ordinary citizen express ourselves***It's very easy for me to divide my views about our country future thus far into different chapters. Failing apart: Current ANC leaderships must stop hiding themselves behind the roles played by following true leaders who defeated apartheid … Nelson Mandela, Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Chris Hani, Elias Motsoaledi, Peter Mokaba, Steve Biko, Ahmed Kathrada, and Walter Sisulu and many more heroes who played their roles which we’ve reap the harvest (or fruits) of "democracy and freedom" which the ordinary SA citizens must enjoy not only the politicians, middle & upper classes. With God Love; we’re not forgetting the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) leaders who officially established the other wing on April 5-6, 1959 with the goal of ending white domination in South Africa. ...

LONG WALK TO FREEDOM Chapter 98 - 99 Chapter 98 EVEN AS De Klerk became president, I continued to meet with the secret negotiating committee. We were joined by Gerrit Viljoen, the minister of constitutional development, a brilliant man with a doctorate in classics, whose role was to bring our discussions into a constitutional framework. I pressed the government to display evidence of its good intentions, urging the state to show its bona fides by releasing my fellow political prisoners at Pollsmoor and Robben Island. While I told the committee that my colleagues had to be released unconditionally, I said the government could expect disciplined behavior from them after their release. That was demonstrated by the conduct of Govan Mbeki, who had been unconditionally released at the end of 1987. On October 10, 1989, President De Klerk announced that Walter Sisulu and seven of my former Robben Island comrades, Raymond Mhlaba, Ahmed Kathrada, Andrew Mlangeni, Elias Motsoaledi, Jeff Masemola, Wilton Mkwayi, and ...
Letter to the Editor The dignity of Umkhonto we Sizwe It is necessary to clarify how MK veterans are identified and honoured, writes Hlaedi Khau. It was in June 1961, after a long and anxious assessment of the South African situation, when Nelson Mandela realised an immediate need for a tactical change in the ANC's non-violent approach to the brutally violent apartheid regime to a violent form of political struggle, and initiated the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe. I am prompted to sharply write this article and raise critical questions in memory of the fallen martyrs of our struggle for liberation, including Oliver Tambo, Joe Slovo, Chris Hani, Raymond Mhlaba and Joe Modise. These comrades were among the first commanders of MK. Praise and honour must also be given in remembrance of Curnick Ndlovu, Looksmart Ngudle, Fred Carneson, Washington Bongco, Vuyisile Mini, Jack Hodgson, Ahmed Kathrada, Arthur Goldreich, Dennis Goldberg, MP Naicker, Ronnie Kasrils and many more comrades of the same status whom I fe ...
"South Africa's Parliamentary Portfolio Committee held a "Solidarity Conference in Support of the Peoples of Palestine, Western Sahara and Cuba" on Thursday, 6th February. The session was opened by an icon of the anti-apartheid struggle, Ahmed Kathrada. He was followed to the podium by South Africa's Deputy Minister of International Relations, Marius Fransman; the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on International Relations, Mr Tisetso Magama, MP; and the Ambassadors of Cuba, Palestine and Western Sahara."
We hope to have a leader whose vision resembles that of Oliver Tambo, whose courage is of Nelson Mandela, whose wisdom is of Walter Sisulu and whose resilience is of Govan Mbeki, whose friendship is of Ahmed Kathrada, whose leadership is of Chief/Inkosi Albert Luthuli, whose bravery is of Chris Hani, whose sacrifice is of Solomon Mahlangu, whose intelligence is of Thabo Mbeki, whose speech is of Anton Lembede, whose initiative is of John Dube. We hope for this leader, and pray to GOD to send us this man in this generation.
Salute to a great departed might soul of South Africa: Dr Nelson Mandela I had a great experience when I visited South Africa in the year 2004 along with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam as a part of official delegation when he was the 11th President of India. I met and shook hands with a great personality who was responsible for the freedom of South Africa and fought against the apartheid. We traveled by helicopter to Robben Island from Cape Town in 10 minutes flight. By fast powered boat it will take 30 minutes to reach the Robben Island. When we reached the Island, except sea roaring, the whole island, was a silent island symbolizing the thought: this is the place the freedom of individual was chained. We were received at the Island by Mr. Ahmed Kathrada a South African, who was a co-prisoner. What surprised me was this: can you imagine a tiny room, where sleeping and all human needs have to be fulfilled. It has to be remembered that Dr. Nelson Mandela, who was 6 feet tall was imprisoned in that room for 26 years .. ...

Nelson Mandela funeral: Live Report (AFP) – 3 minutes ago Qunu (South Africa) — 0701 GMT: Ahmed Kathrada, who was jailed along with Mandela, now addresses the ceremony. He contrasts the Mandela he first met 67 years ago with the sick man he encountered in hospital last time he saw him. "What I saw in hospital was a man helpless and reduced to a shadow of himself and now the inevitable has happened," he says. Song and dance at Mandela's state funera Guests stood, sang and danced shortly before the state funeral of former president Nelson Mandela at a specially constructed dome in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, on Sunday. ANC Women's League members wearing their customary green dresses were the first to begin singing. Other people then began blowing whistles before standing up and dancing. African National Congress stalwart Ahmed Kathrada, who was imprisoned with Mandela, former human settlements minister Tokyo Sexwale, and ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa were present, as was former president Thabo Mbeki and a host of Cabinet ministers. Also attending were Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai and SA Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus. US civil rights activist Jesse Jackson and US ambassador Patrick Gaspard took their seats, alongside businessman Patrice Motsepe. Inside the dome, purple chairs were placed in front of a stage lined with two rows of candles and a portrait of Mandela. ...
Speech by Mandela at the Diwali celebration Speech by comrade Nelson Mandela at Diwali celebration held at Durban City Hall Sunday, 3 November 1991 Diwali brings back for me memories of days on Robben Island. Regularly at this time of year when our Hindu friends the world over were preparing to celebrate the Festival of Lights we would be visited by Hindu priests. I recall Mr. Govender from Cape Town and Mr. Padyachee from Pretoria. They would come and offer prayers wit us and bring with them parcels of sweetmeats. The authorities were insistent that these parcels were only for believers in the Hindu faith. Through our struggles were able to challenge the authorities on this narrow conception and we insisted that all the embracing philosophies that Hinduism is based on extended a hand to all of humanity. In this way I and my fellow comrades such as Wilton Mkwai, Ahmed Kathrada, Ismail Ebrahim and many more joined Billy Nair, Mac Maharaj, Issoo Chiba, George Naicker and others in collectively marking this ...
infact Luthuli ws a nobel peace prize laureate as ealry as 1961 b4 Madibas incarceration..Madiba shared his award with De Klerk..Tambo spearheaded the anti-apartheid struggle as ANC president whilst Madiba & other Rivonia convicts were doing time in jail..how could Madiba hv fought a lone battle against apartheid whilst in jail for 27 yrs??..how about Luthuli,Govan Mbeki,Oliver Tambo,Walter Sisulu,Ahmed Kathrada,Joe Slovo,Chris Hani,Mac Maharaj & others..surely apartheid wsnt fought by Madiba alone as 46664. In renouncing nationalisation,ANC deviated from its central vision of its founders courtesy of Madiba..
A look back at the life of Nelson Mandela Continue reading the main story Death of Mandela Memorial service In pictures Final moments Soweto celebrates To those who observed him closely, Nelson Mandela always carried himself as one who was born to lead. As his former cellmate and long time friend, Ahmed Kathrada, said recently: "He was born into a royal house and there was always that sense about him of someone who knew the meaning of leadership." The Mandela who led the African National Congress into government displayed a conspicuous sense of his own dignity and a self-belief that nothing in 27 years of imprisonment had been capable of destroying. Although Mr Mandela frequently described himself as simply part of the ANC's leadership, there was never any doubt that he was the most potent political figure of his generation in South Africa. "He was the leader, not only of the ANC, but all political formations. I, together with Walter Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba, Ahmed Kathrada, Elias Motsoaledi, Govan Mbeki, and Dennis Goldberg spent between 20 and 26 years of our lives on Robben Island, Pollsmoor and Pretoria prisons.
One of The things I learned from these interesting Madiba programs plus the little schooling the ANC gave me was that. 1. Not only Madiba in fact not only the ANC fought for liberation of our people but the majority of our oppressed people THE ANC,INDIAN CONGRESS,COLOURED(if ever i can use that word) community, the PAC,BCM,n others have played a role to liberate our people. 2. Tat was never n never defined himself outside the collective, he always was n I believe he always will be an ANC member. 3. He had a great support system in mentors n leaders like Walter Sisulu,Ahmed Kathrada,Govan Mbeki,n many other groomed n even looked after him even in prison to ensure he lived long enough to lead us. 4. It will be extremely hard to emulate Tata becoz he didnt only epitomise radicalism or to just fight nje but the ability to forgive, ability to listen, ability to influence, and the tactical response to know how to dismentle n disempower the enemy n change it to your course. 5. He cared for our people deeply. 6. T ...
We must not lose sight of the fact that Mandela was never the b-all and end all of the anti-Apartheid struggle. His wife Winnie, his comerades at the ANC, such as Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, Govan Mbeki, Albert Luthuli, Ahmed Kathrada, Joe Slovo, Ruth First, and his counterparts outside of it, such as Robert Sobukwe, Helen Suzman, Desmond Tutu, Steve Biko, Mamphela Ramphele, Trevor Huddleston, and many others played valuable roles, often losing their lives. They must not be forgotten.
Struck by a simple statement by Ahmed Kathrada, who was jailed with Mandela on Robben Island: "Under his leadership we achieved dignity."

Moving words from Ahmed Kathrada (long time Robben Island prisoner alongside "He was my big brother - I don't know who to turn to"
Ahmed Kathrada pays tribute to Nelson Mandela We called each other ‘Madala’ – old man – it became our standard form of informal address. To me it signifies mutual trust, respect, liking and close comradeship. In a wider sense, this one word brings out much more. It encapsulates the foundation of the very qualities that set you apart from other men. Foremost is your sincere and consistent ability and skill in relating as equals to fellow beings from all walks of life – royalty, peasants, prime ministers, business people, presidents, workers, scientists, the illiterate, children, men and women: you treat, and regard, all as equal and equally deserving of respect, decency and dignity. You embodied the epitome of respect for your fellow beings, and the ability to relate easily to every strata of society. This outstanding quality reminds me of my first encounter with you in 1945 or 1946 at Ismail Meer’s Flat 13, Kholvad House in Johannesburg. What sticks in my memory is: Here I was, a mere 16 or 17 ...
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom was a great watch. Adapted to screenplay, director Justin Chadwick outlines the life and struggle of Madiba in South Africa. The sets constructed depicts South Africa during the struggle years of oppression and allows us to understand where Nelson Mandela came from. The movie features a recognised ensemble with Tsotsi star and former face of Lux, Terry Pheto portraying the role of Mandela's first wife Evelyn. Naomi Harris delivers a power-packed performance as Winnie Madikezela Mandela. Riaad Moosa depicts close Mandela ally and ANC veteran activist Ahmed Kathrada. Other familiar faces include the likes of Jamie Bartlett, Rob Van Vuuren and Tony Karoge. One may think that Edris Elba best known for movie roles such as "Obsession and Pacific Rim" and "Luther" on television is not a great resemblance of Tata Madiba, a role than Morgan Freeman was born to play, however. Elba's dialect and voice alongwith movement and poses is strikingly similar. He delivers a performance that is ...
As am seating here in a Restaurant not far from Lilies Leaf Farm. I think as Black South African we must be grateful & proud that a Generation of Real Leaders stood up & said enough is enough they sacrificed their lives, their families to fight this injustice, what is of paramount importance when the system retaliated with force by killing unarmed people they took the fight to a whole new level. ✊Amongst them were, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada, Rusty Bernstein, Dennis Goldberg, James Kantor, Andrew Mlangeni, Elias Motsoaledi, Raymond Mhlaba and Bob Hepple. As a Black South African I will always be grateful, will ensure that my children & their children understand & appreciate where we come from & must NEVER be mislead by hypocrites that claim to have fought for our Freedom.

TODAY IN HISTORY (29 October, 1989) After the release of Walter Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba of the African National Congress(ANC) and Ahmed Kathrada of the Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC) on 15 October 1989, a rally was organised by the ANC to commemorate their release from prison. The rally, which was held at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, was attended by thousands of South Africans. It was the first time that these leaders were able to speak to South Africans after 25 years. Their release from prison and the rally marked the beginning of the end ofapartheid.
A REVOLUTION BETRAYED By John Pilger 24 April 1998 Freedom next time: If you have no home, no job and no water within half a mile, it doesn't feel as though anything much has changed In the early morning sunlight a watchtower stands silhouetted against Table Mountain; two ostriches stroll by the gently rolling surf. Robben Island is a wildlife sanctuary now, its bleak beauty and silence part of the veneer of the new South Africa. "Apparently that's the quarry where they worked," said the Afrikaner helicopter pilot as he banked to land, unaware that one of them was sitting next to him. Kathy looked down and nodded, his dark glasses covering eyes permanently damaged by the glare of the limestone where he and Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu and other dangerous men wielded a pick year upon year, decade upon decade. "It was a bitterly cold winter's day in 1964 when the seven of us were flown here," said Kathy, whose name is Ahmed Kathrada. "We'd all been sentenced to life in the Rivonia treason trial. I was 3 ...

Prof. Habib's speech at Annual Lecture South Africa: Approaching a Moment of Reckoning By Adam Habib Ahmed Kathrada, Barbara Hogan, Bobby Godsell, Ladies and gentlemen, Friends and Colleagues, and Comrades, Let me begin by thanking the Kathrada Foundation for honouring me with the invitation to deliver the annual Ahmed Kathrada lecture. Ahmed Kathrada is a name that resonates with progressives across this land and the world over. Not only was he compatriot of our icon Nelson Mandela, not only was he a cadre of our liberation struggle, not only was he one of our great leaders imprisoned in Robin island, but he also represents a generation of leadership whom we can still look up to, who were and have been unsullied by the trappings of power, and the ostentatiousness lifestyles of what is fast becoming a parasitic political elite. Today I wish to pay tribute to Ahmed Kathrada, and through him to the generation of leaders of our liberation struggle – Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, Moses Kotane ...

“When Mandela says that Robben Island was a university it wasn’t just an academic university, it was also a university of human behaviour, human relations. In that situation where 25 of you are locked up for so many years you learn human behaviour.” – Ahmed Kathrada
