It would seem to me that African Americans would be aghast at this ruling with our history in America of not receiving full equality. We arrived on these shores in 1619 as indentured servants, and we were made slaves for life in 1641. After the Civil War ended in 1865, we received full citizenship. We started losing those rights in the 1870s, and they weren’t restored until the 1960s. Now, it seems that our rights will be diminished again unless we stand up and fight this frontal attack on us. It's the last day of Black History Month and I would like to remember some of the greatest and most brave people (especially African Americans) who fought and continue to fight for racial equality: MLK, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, President Lincoln, LBJ, Bill Russell, and President Obama. We should never forget the hundreds of years in which America committed a crime greater than any war, bombing, or genocide. Slavery and segregation (which demeaned a race for 300 years) are the greatest evils in our history and the reason for which affirmative action, voting rights laws, and economic stimulation and funding for education in inner cities are all necessary. We should live our lives, not blind of color, but in love, awe, and respect of the diversity our nation allows. Only then will "We [be able to] hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
President Obama launched "My Brother's Keeper" today - a nationwide initiative to help young men of color. Caucasian was not one of the colors. The president's plan will only help African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans. Other colors need not apply. Shame on you, Mister President. 12 Years a Slave. A powerful story powerfully told. And while Brad Pitt's character provides the means for Solomon's eventual return to freedom (that's not a spoiler right? Did you think there was a chance this movie was made about a free man who endures slavery for 12 years and then DOESN'T escape it?), and I know Pitt's company helped produce the film, but couldn't he have taken a different side role? His accent, his beard, his Pittness, it took me out of the whole thing for a moment. Any awards for this film are richly deserved. It was not The Passion of the Slave lets-assuage-some-white-guilt movie I had half expected based on some reviews. It is a story of survival, of love, of family, of what human beings are capable of, for good and for evil. GOD, President Lincoln, Dr.King and President Obama - As I sat through the movie "Lincoln" at some parts my eyes watered, as I reflected 150 years forward . As I look around I believe African Americans sometimes take for granted the mighty price that was paid for emancipation and the abolishment of slavery. I think all Americans take for granted the tumultuous process to freedom. Now I am at the King Center, 50 years from the "I Have a Dream" speech in the era of an Obama Presidency. Speaking to another parent from my daughter's elementary school, we are very disappointed that the teachers spend more time on Valentine's Day in the month of February, but do almost nothing for Black History Month. When I was there, few, if any, of our First graders even knew who Dr. King was. And in all honesty, many teachers will talk about Dr. King and Rosa Parks as if they are the only African Americans who are worthy of their time. And please don't get me started on the fact that none of them have a picture of President Obama in their rooms or even discuss him on President's Day; there maybe one or two as the exception. I am disappointed to not have heard this anywhere else today. My FF will know: So much as there is only one person to blame for what has become of this country, that person is Ted Kennedy. Kennedy in 1965 changed the immigration laws to allow non-english speaking have a major advantage over English speaking people to immigrate to the U.S. That lead to an influx of very poor, very dependent voters whom the Democrat (mostly) party has taken advantage of for decades. Combine that with the intentional explosion of the welfare roles during President Obama's first term and the atrocity that the (again mostly) Democratic Party has committed against African Americans and you now have a large part of the voting population that depends on the State for everything, that the Democratic Party continues to promise the world, and that continues to under perform in spite of those promises. I suspect those same people will still be disappointed in 4 years, and it will still be the GOP's fault.

It goes without question that, if President Obama wins reelection, he will have done so with one of the most diverse coalitions ever assembled by a major party nominee. He will have won large majorities of women, young people, African Americans, Latinos and Asian Americans.
If voting for Romney is racist, then why is there a large group of African American leadership speaking out for Romney? Some have said Tea Party is racist? Attended a large private gathering of Independent Women Voters this past weekend and it became very clear that the consensus is that President Obama will win 2012 and that Hilary Clinton will run and more than likely win in 2016. President Obama issued a proclamation in observance of Juneteenth see below: On this day in 1865, two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, word finally reached the people of Galveston, Texas that the Civil War was over. All enslaved men, women and children were now free. Though it would take decades of struggle and collective effort before African Americans were granted equal treatment and protection under the law, Juneteenth is recognized by Americans everywhere as a symbolic milestone in our journey toward a more perfect union. With the recent ground breaking of the first Smithsonian Museum dedicated to African American History and Culture, and the dedication of a monument to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the National Mall, this Juneteenth offers another opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come as a nation. And it’s also a chance to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of guaranteeing liberty and equal rights for all Americans.
2. Team Obama's mistakes are causing panic -- hence poor campaigning. It wasn't the Romney team that told President Obama to go out and drag the effort to redefine marriage into the 2012 election cycle. And they certainly didn't tell Obama to do so merely two days after North Carolina -- a tightly contested Swing State -- just voted two-to-one in favor of the traditional definition in President Obama's most loyal voting block: African Americans. If Mitt Romney can get two percent more African Americans to vote for him -- or just stay home on Election Day -- he will cause the president to lose in a demographic that has been the only subset of voters current surveys indicate he has the possibility to hold on to.
