Spiritual Prescriptions – Controlling the Inner Noise Yoga Sutras of Patanjali define yoga as restraint of the mental states (Chapter 1.2). In the state of total restraint, the mind is devoid of any external object and is in its true self or the consciousness. To control the mind many Vedic scholars have given their own formulas. Being in touch with one’s own consciousness requires restraining of the mind, intellect and ego on one hand and the triad of rajas, tamas and satwa on the other hand. Every action leads to a memory, which in turn leads to a desire and with this a vicious cycle starts. The mental turmoil of thoughts can be equated to the internal noise and the external desires and objects to an external noise. The process of withdrawing from the external noise with an aim to start a journey inwards the silent field of awareness bypassing the internal noise is called pratihara by Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It involves living in a satwik atmosphere based on the dos and don’ts learnt over a peri ...

Sri Adi Shankara's meeting with Lord Shiva in the form of Chandala and four dogs and also the weblink to the story. One scorching day of summer, Adi Shankaracharya and his followers were going to bathe in the river Ganges at the Manikarna ghat. A Chandala (an untouchable and worker at the cremation ground, at the very bottom of the social scale) with four dogs held in leash, was approaching in a disorderly manner from the opposite direction. Finding no other way of avoiding a confrontation with him, Shankara addressed him and said, “Oh, you Chandala, step aside one side with your canine company, and let us pass”. The Chandala did not appear to have listened to his words at all, and did not tarry of deflect, but continued to advance. Shankara in a somewhat excited voice cried out again, “Stop, fellow, stop. Restrain and pacify your curs. Leave a passage free for us”. The terrible looking Chandala burst out into hideous guffaw and turning to Shankara, spoke out in Sanskrit verses, “Whom are you as ...

The guru should be one who knows the scriptures, is blameless and a supreme knower of God. He should be at peace in God, tranquil as a fire that has run out of fuel. He should be a boundless ocean of compassion and the friend of those who seek his protection. ~ Sri Adi Shankaracharya
People fall under many categories – well-wisher, friend, enemy, neutral, mediator, someone we dislike for no reason, relation, and so on. Adi Shankaracharya has advised us to accept people as they are. Just as we accept fruits and flowers as they are; we accept animals as they are; we accept fire as hot, we should accept people and adjust ourselves accordingly. There is no point in constantly complaining. Pujya Guruji.

Badrinath • Rameswaram Dwarka • Puri This box: view talk edit Char Dham (literally: 'the four abodes/seats') are the names of four pilgrimage places in India that are widely revered by most Hindus: Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram.[1] The Char Dham defined by Adi Shankaracharya consists of three Vaishnavite, one Shaivite, and one mixed site[citation needed]. Over the years, the term "Char Dham" has lent itself to the all-denomination Char Dham pilgrimages in the Garhwal Himalayas, where Adi Shankaracharya attained freedom from embodiment. Earlier known as Chota Char Dham or 'Little' Char Dham to differentiate them from the bigger circuit of Char Dham sites, after the mid-20th century they themselves started being called the Char Dham.[2] Today, the term "Char Dham" usually refers to the all-denomination Himalayan Char Dham. The Char Dham are often considered the most revered sites for Hindus that have to be visited in one's lifetime. HistoryEdit The four temples are Badrinath Temple, Jaganath Te ...
Divyadesam number10.Dwarakadheesh Temple The Dwarakadheesh temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is worshipped here by the name Dwarkadhish, or 'King of Dwarka'. It is situated at Dwarka, Gujarat, which is believed to have been built after the historic Dvarka city, the Kingdom of Krishna which submerged into the ocean after the Mahabharata war. The main shrine of the 5-storied building, supported by 72 pillars, is known as Jagat Mandir or Nija Mandir, and is believed to be 2,500 years old. The Dwarkadhish Temple is a Pushtimarg temple, hence it follows the guidelines and rituals created by Shree Vallabhacharya and Shree Vitheleshnathji. The present temple was built in 16th century CE, while the original temple was believed to have been built by Krishna's grandson, Vajranabha, over the hari-griha (Lord Krishna's residential place). The temple became part of the Char Dham pilgrimage considered sacred by Hindus in India, after Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th century reformer and philosopher, vi ...
Q: Guruji, I always have confusion between ‘Dvaita’ philosophy and ‘Advaita’ philosophy. Madhvacharya has spoken about ‘Dvaita’ and Adi Shankaracharya has spoken about ‘Advaita’. Please explain both. Sri Sri: ‘Advaita’ is like quantum physics and ‘Dvaita’ is like chemistry. In chemistry you say there are these many isotopes or you refer a periodic table where they categorize all the different elements. But if you go to a quantum physicist, he will say, ‘it is all just wave function’. A periodic table does not exist for a quantum physicist. He says everything is only atoms; wave functions. Both are right. Chemistry has its utility and physics has its reality. It is really brilliant what Adi Shankara has said and it is equally very interesting what Madhvacharya has said. He said, ‘everything exists at their different levels and at that level it is good.’ On a practical note, Madhvacharya emphasised on love and devotion. For love you need two and in devotion you need someone t ...
The Maoist onslaught on Indian priests at the famous Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu has been halted temporarily, thanks to the implementation of Supreme Court's stay order on termination of services of the priests. The nitya puja at the temple has been restored and things appear to have been smoothen out. This episode has raised certain questions regarding the history of the temple and its builder or builders and whether Adi Shankaracharya of Kaladi, Kerala had visited the shrine in order to get it rid of alleged growing Buddhist influence. Most Hindus in India and Nepal believe that Adi Shankara visited Pashupatinath and worshipped there. During the last fortnight or so, reports emanating from Kathmandu had placed the age of the temple to only about 300 years or so. A few television channels there had mentioned names of the King(s) who had built it. In any case, there is a great deal of confusion about these two aspects – the date of establishment of the temple and the visit of Adi Shankaracharya. A ...

10 days ago, Kedarnath temple and the Nandi Bull at its entrance was the sole survivor of landslides and flash floods. Thousand of devotees are feared dead. In the 2012 season 5.5 lakh pilgrims visited Kedarnath . In 2000 BC, Adi Shankaracharya came to Kedarnath with 4 of his disciples. However he preferred to go the final 14 kilometers alone to Kedarnath temple from Gauri Kund hot springs , which he created for his shivering disciples . He shed his mortal coil at Kedarnath temple and attained moksha at the age of 32. Moksha is freedom for the endless cycle of re-births. The relatives of the pilgrims who died must seek consolation from this belief that at Kedanath you get Mokshsa , if you die ( not if you commit suicide ). Adi Shankaracharya who was born in Kerala at Kaladi , was kicked forward in time by the white Christian invader and their Tamilian Iyer Brahmin stooges by 2800 years . In 1956 CE, 1168 years later another boy is born in Paapnasanam Village of Tamil Nadu. His Birth time/date matched with that of Adi Shankaracharya i.e Shukla Paksha Panchami of Baisakh Month( Indian Lunar calendar) . The Boy was named Ravi Shankar. This later got changed Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (name changed because a particular Musical maestro felt young Sri Sri was getting mileage due to commonality of the name.) By His 17th year, Sri Sri was well versed in Shastras. That is when Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ji spotted the brilliance and the light and took young Ravi Shankar into his wings. The Sant Samaj and spiritual stalwarts across India had high hopes with the prodigy who seemed to be at home already with the truth that was to be realized. Three-four years before The Art of Living was founded, Maharishi ji and his spiritual peers asked Ravi Shankar to assume the seat of Shankaracharya peeth in Govardhan Math, Puri. Ravi Shankar sat down in a Kaali temple and asked for guidance from Goddess herself. The inne ...
World War-I, II, Tsunami of 2004, San Francisco Earthquake of 1902, Super Typhoon Nina of China, Famine of 1974 in Bangladesh, British rule on India, Mahatma Gandhi, Invention of Electricity & Automobiles, Democracy replacing Monarchy in India, Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984; If these really happened and they aren't fiction, then I must say that these were predicted 700+ yrs ago itself. After reading his life history I personally rate Sri Veerabrahmendra as one of the Sadgurus like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Ramana Maharshi, and Adi Shankaracharya. I'm happy that the life history of such a great saint has been brought to the limelight. Coming to the author, I would say that his story telling skills are appreciable, the way his narration & screenplay goes; it looks as if one is watching a movie. He has also put his own commentary as ‘Footnotes’ in many chapters which reveal many additional secrets of Hinduism. It was a nice reading experience and I'm sure whosoever reads this, would hold the same opinion. DE ...
Adi Shakaracharya (5th century BC) was undoubtedly an immortal spiritual leader who, by his matchless speculative daring, grand practical idealism, remorseless logic and stern intellectualism gave an interpretation of the mysteries of life whose influence is still great. Shankaracharya is a colossus of India's cultural history. He re-established the Swami order and, along with propounding Advaita (non-dual Brahman), his unequalled contribution to life in the country lies in providing a geographical as well as metaphysical definition to Hinduism. Adi Shankaracharya established mathas across the length and breadth of the country: Sringeri in the south, Dwarka in the west, Badrinarayan in the north, Govardhan, Puri, in the East. It is to his journeys that the Indic civilisation owes both its metaphysical continuity as well as its physical unity. American historian Will Durant has written about him: "In his short life of thirty-two years Sankara achieved that union of sage and saint, of wisdom and kindliness, ...
15th May, Today is the birth anniversary of Adi Shankaracharya. Happy Day ! My deep Homage to this great Hindu Sage. Teachings of Adi Shankaracharya: -When the mind is purified like a mirror, knowledge is revealed in it. Care should therefore be taken to purify the mind. -The annihilation of ignorance is salvation. -The charity at right time is precious. -Truth is that which helps the living beings. -One’s own pure mind is the greatest pilgrimage. That is knowledge that helps in getting united to the Brahman.
Adi Shankaracharya is widely known for his teachings on Vedanta. Shankaracharya was born in the village of Kaladi, in South India, about 2500 years ago to his Brahmin parents, Sivaguru and Aryamba. He traveled throughout India during his life, preaching and establishing four important maths, or centers, and accepted numerous disciples. He had also composed a number of verses and hymns of his knowledge and insight. However, the Bhaja Govindam is perhaps his greatest. He is still today one of the greatest influences in the present-day understanding of Vedic philosophy, with numerous schools of thought throughout India still expounding his teachings.  He primarily taught the non-dual, or advaita, form of understanding, teaching that everything is ultimately one. Many of the commentaries on the Vedic texts, such as the Brahma-samhita, the Upanishads, and others, are written with commentaries by those who follow his advaitic principles. Thus, many such texts have the impersonalistic sway to them, leaving ou ...

jainismwas in full swing in India prior to Hinduism. All royal people were influenced by Jain monks and there speech on ruthless Hindu Kshatriya or warrior dharma/religion of protection & offense. They highlighted the path of peace and salvation that could only be attained by Jainism. The Brahmins performed a great Puja and earnestly prayed Lord Shiva to stop the progress of Jainism. According to aggressive Hindu beliefs Adi Shankaracharya was born. Regarding Shankaracharya it is said in at least one case he was not able to answer questions placed by a married woman regarding sex and he was not aware of sexual behaviors because being a Brahmin he was performing vrat of Brahmcharya where a person is supposed to fight back any sexual thoughts arising in mind. Hence his knowledge regarding sex was either zero or in infancy or very less as compared to sex indulged people of his age. The antics of Adi Shankara in the 8th century assuming he was born in 788 and died in 820 CE are well known and part of history. ...
16. Books on Bhagavad Gita Almost unlimited books on Bhagavad Gita are available in the market... both in print and e-form. Some are commentaries... others summaries but most books on Bhagavad Gita available in market had literal translation of scriptural text that did not get us anything in life. Such books on Gita carried no meaning in spiritual world.     Commentary on Bhagavad Gita by Adi Shankaracharya was sacred as it contained truth but only truth. But commentaries by those who had not yet gained enlightenment in their lifetime simply carried no meaning. Literal reading of Bhagavad Gita never led one to God Almighty. Unless we contemplated on inner meaning of every shloka verse... we never gained anything out of Gita.    Whenever we read a book relating to Bhagavad Gita... we must contemplate on each and every issue detailed in the book. Those who never indulged in contemplation followed path of religion... path of rituals that never led to God Almighty. Bhagavad Gita explicitly states... God ...
Bhagvan Vishnu-narayana is supreme god in all Ved History has told us that the great Seers, such as Nimbarkacharya (c.3000BCE), Vallabhacharya, Madhavacharya, Ramaujacharya and even Adi Shankaracharya (c.500BCE) have lauded Sri Vishnu in his various avatars or incarnations as the Supreme. Although Shankaracharya was an Advaitacharya, he composed the Bhaja Govindam in dedication to Sri Krishna as the Supreme, as also his own family deity (kula devata) was Krishna. Parahamsa Yogananda the great Kriya Yogi and author of “Autobiography of a Yogi” has also noted his Sadguru or Primal Guru was Babaji, himself in the consciousness of Krishna – hence referring to Krishna as the Supreme. He also translated the Bhagavad Gita of Sri Krishna and used it as the authority text on Yoga. Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikhs also himself used the terms Hari, Govinda, Rama, Krishna etc. to denote the Supreme or “Adi Purush” (Primal Man), which is himself Vishnu. Sikhism itself also employs the Gita text, and dev ...
“Sansar se bhagey firtey *** bhagwaan ko tum kya paogey, Is lok ko bhi apna na sake, us lok mein bhi pachtaogey” crooned Lata Tai in CHITRALEKHA, the masterpiece based on Bhagwati Charan Verma’s novel of same name. Today 2000 sadhus are slated to be anointed as NAGA BABA today on MAUNI AMAVASYA in MAHAKUMBH after 12 years of rigorous training. Tradition of renunciation and the debate whether one can be a sanyasi while very much being a part of the world is endless. Mandan Mishra and his wife Bharati had defeated Adi Shankaracharya in Shastrartha when they expounded that one cannot renounce the world without first being a part of and contributing to it. A true grahasth (householder) creates a good family and a good society. The theme was explored with some incisive insight into Hindu spiritual tradition of Vedas and Upanishads in his book “Siddhartha” by Hermann Hesse, later rendered in a beautiful film featuring Shashi Kapoor and Simi Garewal. Needless to say that this tradition has a strong mal ...

History of Kumbha Mela SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE KUMBHA-MELA... Adi Shankaracharya, a prominent saint of Indian history mobilized all saintly people under the flag of ‘Sanatan Dharma’. There started, the common understanding of this religious gathering at river Ganges during the holy month of Magh (according to hindu calendar), when there are special astronomic conjunctions with Sun, Jupiter and Moon. The first foreign traveler to notice and mention about this event was Xuanzang, a Chinese Buddhist Monk and Scholar. He also mentioned about the duration of event to be around 2 months, the details about saints and processions, celebrations, bathing ceremonies etc which proves Kumbh Mela to be started much earlier than seventh century. According To Mythological Beliefs However, the ve ...

Marad Massacre and Beyond: Kerala, the New Hub of Communal Violence Once again our Media conveniently ignored 9th anniversary of this brutal massacre which changed the communal overtones in Kerala. May, 9 years ago stood witness to one of the most brutal chapters in Kerala history, nay in the chapters of Indian history, when an armed Muslim mob hacked to death 8 people of the Hindu community. The gruesome episode that took place in Marad, Kozhikode district of Kerala was carved in blood as ‘Marad Massacre’. If you thought that Marad Massacre stands as an isolated case of communal violence in Kerala, here is more to what lies largely unreported by mainstream media in ‘God’s Own Country’. For any human who has made a visit to Kerala even once, the very mention of the state’s name floods the mind with a fleet of pleasantries. Unadulterated greenery and tourism, serene temples, Adi Shankaracharya and Adwaitha, highly educated people, meandering fresh water rivers, coconut based cuisines- the list ...
