The debate about differences in the performances of Adelina Sotnikova and Kim Yu-na in Women's Figure Skating comes down largely to the relative importance of power and artistry. Based on their performances, both of them deserved Gold.

Favored to win, South Korea's Yuna Kim wins silver Adelina Sotnikova, a Russian teenager, beats Kim as some experts question results The judging system in Figure Skating is anonymous (CNN) -- In the final chapter of her storied Olympic Figure Skating career, South Korea's Yuna Kim won silver -- not able to defend her shot at gold against a Russian teenager who seemingly came out of nowhere to get the top prize. Instantly, there was controversy. Russia's Adelina Sotnikova finished with a total score of 224.59, beating Kim's score of 219.11 by 5.48 points after the free skate program. Sotnikova, 17, became the first female Russian skater to win in the category. Some pointed out that she had stepped out after landing a triple combination, and others raised questions about the anonymous judging system. *** Button, a men's Figure Skating two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, said he didn't think Sotnikova was the whole package. It didn't help that one of the judges had been suspended for a year for trying to fix an ...

Russia's Adelina Sotnikova was good, but was she 5 points better than her Korean competitor? Absolutely not.
I'm no Figure Skating expert. I'm just a fan who wanted to write a fist-pumping post celebrating Adelina Sotnikova, despite the chatter that her free skate scores were higher than she deserved.
After a women's final that saw Russia's Adelina Sotnikova eclipsing heavy favorite Kim Yu-na for the Gold Medal, Figure Skating's subjective judging system is again creating both intrigue and outrage.
QUOTE OF THE DAY “Ashley remembered my birthday” — Elizabeth Olsen on whether or not she has a favorite twin. Uh oh, Mary-Kate. LET’S MAKE A DEAL? THE STORY After more than 67 people were killed in conflicts between anti-government protesters and police yesterday, it looks like there may be a deal to bring some peace to Ukraine. THREE SENTENCES. WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON? A few months ago, Ukraine was about to get in on a big trade deal with the EU, but the president backed out and cozied up to Russia instead. There have been escalating protests ever since, resulting in a truce on Wednesday, which was quickly broken. The international community is not having this and the EU voted yesterday to impose sanctions on those it thinks are responsible. ABOUT THAT DEAL… President Yanukovich had an all night talkathon with reps from the EU. They’ve reached a tentative deal, without releasing any real details. There is still a long way to go though since a) the deal hasn’t been signed yet and b) the oppos ...
Russia's Adelina Sotnikova rode a powerful wave of national emotion to win a controversial Olympic Figure Skating title on Thursday as the Sochi Games felt shockwaves from Ukraine's bloody civil unrest.
Eyebrows were already arched when Yulia Lipnitskaya flopped on her bottom and still managed to stay ahead of Ashley Wagner, who didn’t. But then Yuna Kim, the graceful, gracious Korean champion, lost her Gold Medal to a less fluid Russian upstart, Adelina Sotnikova of Russia.

Earlier today, Russian Figure Skating sensation Adelina Sotnikova celebrated her Gold Medal win with a stop at the OMEGA Watches Pavilion at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Also present at the OMEGA Pavilion was award-winning Swiss singer Bastian Baker, who treated Adelina and other guests to an unplugged performance. The pair posed for photos with OMEGA President Stephen Urquhart and participated in a Q&A with OMEGA Vice President and International Sales Director Raynald Aeschlimann.
And in the randomness of a 'quiet' night here at Medals Plaza, the Gold Medalist Ladies Figure Skater from Russia, Adelina Sotnikova, was running way late for her Medals ceremony. Her vehicle drove up to our load zone and I said to her, "We have to RUN!" So run we did, over the Julia Bridge and got her in the Green Room. Wasn't expecting any exercise tonight! Off to USA vs. Canada.
Controversy or not, Adelina Sotnikova is the most Russian and awesome name I've ever heard.
What a petty Katarina Witt is not considered a well-deserved victory Adelina Sotnikova. Low and dirty deed with her hand and all who think so!
Russian girl Adelina Sotnikova represents an extreme activist to bring up revolution. Yulia Lipnitskaya respects tradition. I love both of them, and I think Yulia has all the reasons to be upset by her scores which is undeservingly behind others.
I feel bad for Adelina Sotnikova. She'll forever be remembered as the girl who robbed Kim Yuna, not as a young athlete. Nice going Russia.
At the press conference for the Russian ladies this afternoon, Adelina Sotnikova's coach was asked about the comments Ashley Wagner made to the press. She said: "Ashley is very cunning. She came and congratulated and actually said Adelina was the best."
More than 1 million people have signed an online petition for an “open investigation” of the Figure Skating judging process following Russian Adelina Sotnikova’s controversial Gold Medal win over South Korea’s Yuna Kim.
► SUNNY & YURI || CHEER VIDEO Winter Olympics (MBC) Here is Sunny and Yuri, cheering for the Winter Olympics, specifically in Figure Skating. It wasn't a very good day for Koreans though, due to the controversial results yesterday. It's hard to respect a decision when you know the outcome has been botched. Sadly, South Korea's beloved Figure Skating was denied of her Olympic Gold at her final Winter Olympics, losing to Adelina Sotnikova of Russia. Yuna is now retiring from the sport, which makes it even harder to accept. Regardless, we wish Yuna all the best in her future endevours. She skated in full glory, amazing as always!
More than 1.5m people have signed a petition demanding an inquiry into Adelina Sotnikova's victory in the women's Figure Skating
Adelina Sotnikova was excellent tonight, but Yuna Kim was robbed
Congrats to Yuna Kim on winning silver and to Adelina Sotnikova for being Russian.
With all of the she-wuz-robbed controversy over the Olympic Figure Skating finals where Korea's “Queen” Kim Yuna was scored second behind Gold Medalist Adelina Sotnikova of Russia, it's useful to look back at what led to this, and when the sport of figure slating was forever changed One person's Olympic performances caused a radical shift in the sport. That person was Trixie Schuba of Austria. She's 62 years old now, but she was just out of her teens when she became the world's dominant figure skater, the leading person in a sport that was far different when she won gold at Sapporo in 1972. At that time and for most of the sport's history the main aspect was the skill of skating circular patterns into the ice. Those “school figures” are where the sport takes its name. The obsessive carving of those patterns was the goal of winning a competition. In the same way that hyper athletic basketball centers such as Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led to the banning of the dunk shot in hig ...
South Koreans blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin and biased judging at the Sochi Games after their top skater Kim Yuna was denied back-to-back Olympic golds by Russia's Adelina Sotnikova.
Olympics-Scent of scandal in Sochi, US face Canada in ice hockey (Reuters) * South Koreans complain of Figure Skating bias * Online petition demands inquiry into Russian gold * German athlete returns abnormal doping result * U.S., Canadian men meet in big ice hockey clash By Mike Collett-White SOCHI, Russia, Feb 21 (Reuters) – The scent of scandal lingered over the Sochi Olympics on Friday after contentious judging favoured an unfancied Russian over South Korea’s Kim Yuna in the women’s Figure Skating contest, and a test produced the first suspect blood sample of the Games. As Russia’s first Winter Olympics headed into the final weekend, the host nation rejoiced after snatching the coveted Figure Skating title for the first time late on Thursday. Adelina Sotnikova, who few had expected to be among the medals before the competition began, eclipsed overwhelming favourite Kim despite the defending champion producing a stirring performance that many viewers had deemed to be enough. Adelina Sotnikova's LP at led me to revisit Michelle Kwan's performance of the same music at 14 yrs old:
If i were you Adelina Sotnikova, id give back my gold to Kim Yuna.you're young &promising.
Kim Yu Na (known as Queen Yuna at home) - the South Korean superstar was denied gold by 17-year-old Russian Adelina Sotnikova - and suggested afterwards she is ready to retire at the age of 23. Holding a slender lead over Sotnikova after Wednesday's short programme, Kim appeared to skate a flawless routine but was denied by the judges, who instead awarded victory to the home athlete. (Note: the judges never gave a technical reason as to why, all they said was Adelina Sotnikova had more heart, that is not quantifiable by a score.) Sotnikova, who appeared to stumble midway through her routine, scored 149.95 for her free skate - just 0.11 shy of Kim's world record at the Vancouver Games - giving her a total of 224.59. Whereas Kim scored 144.19, with her total of 219.11 leaving her in the silver medal position. Kim donates generously to good cause (who was said to have won Us$14 million prize money) and is heavily involved in charity work. Among her many charitable contributions include donations to help the ...

Finally I was able to watch the Free Skate from start to finish! Adelina Sotnikova was sensational in both the Short program and in the Free Skate to more than merit the Gold Medal; Carolina Kostner redeemed herself after that disaster in Vancouver 2010 with a brilliant skate; we found out that the Americans don't really know who their best skater is, and that the judges don't either because we got to see them back-to-back and Ashley Wagner is a much better skater who is also better looking than is Gracie Gold; we saw the future and her name is Yulia Lipnitskaya; and Kaetlyn Osmond Canadian Figure Skater was in tough against the world coming off of that serious injury that kept her off the ice for almost the entire season. Skate Canada / Patinage Canada has hope for the future but so do half a dozen other countries. We'll have to see how things play out from now until the next Olympiad.
Sochi shocker: The 'wow' performance of the Games earns Adelina Sotnikova gold for Russia! Check out this gallery of the top performances.
Adelina Sotnikova should be embarassed and ashamed of herself. Just like Putin should be and the rest of the Russian Olympic Committee.
I don't know much about skating so I don't know who is better, Kim Yuna or Adelina Sotnikova
I wanna see Adelina Sotnikova performance, so that I can decide if all this ranting for Kim Yuna is valid...I saw Kim Yuna's, and it WAS REALLY GOOD...but i have read some reviews that said that Adelina Sotnikova brought a harder performance... if someone has a link..send it to me PLEASE...
I may be super annoyed and confused with the scoring of the free skate, but I'm happy that Carolina Kostner finally got her medal, that Yuna Kim came back and showed us all that she's still the queen, and that Adelina Sotnikova proved that she was the Russian figure skater to be reckoned with all along. (Sorry, you're never gonna convince me that Yulia Lipnitskaya, of her own volition, was like "I want to be the girl in the red coat from Schindler's List for my free skate!) Congratulations to the medalists!
Can someone explain to me how Adelina Sotnikova won gold over Kim Yuna? I'm not an expert in Figure Skating at all, so I'm clueless. Personally, I thought Kim Yuna was flawless, but that's my personal opinion. Please educate me!
Much to my surprise, Russia's Adelina Sotnikova upsets Korea's Kim Yuna for the gold in the grand finale of Olympic Winter Games skating, the ladies' single. Queen Yuna looked to have performed the best to me; overall she really skated best yet strangely did not attempt to include one more triple she needed that would have won her the gold. Don't get me wrong, both women skated nearly flawless programs, Yuna elegant & sensual-Sotnikova athlethic & vibrant, but Sotnikova completed one more decisive triple jump. Made all the difference. Yuna gets the silver, Italy's Carolina Kostner took the bronze. I predicted a Yuna, Sotnikova, Kostner finish and loved that Kostner finally won herself an Olympic medal as she brings to an end her run of Olympic competitions on a high & very well deserved note.
Like most I'm very upset Kim Yuna did not win gold. Adelina Sotnikova did skate well no doubt but my heart is with Yuna. ALL HAIL THE QUEEN!

Sochi medal wrap-up, Day 13: Adelina Sotnikova wins Russia’s first-ever women's Figure Skating gold: RT’s Olympic updates Sochi 2014 medals table Thursday's ice was favorable to some figure skaters, yet cruel to others. Fifteen-year-old Russian athlete Yulia Lipnitskaya fell while performing during the free program, failing to repeat her flawless skating at the team event. Japan’s Mao Asada, however, delivered a great performance in the free program, bringing her an impressive amount of points. But due to her fall in the short program, the Vancouver 2010 silver champion finished in sixth place. Vancouver 2010 champion Yuna Kim of South Korea failed to achieve the top score, finishing in second place. Italy’s Carolina Kostner placed third. This time around, the podium certainly belonged to 17-year-old Russian prodigy Adelina Sotnikova, who won a surprise Gold Medal. Sotnikova placed second in the short program, trailing slightly behind Kim. However, her stunning performance at the free program impr ...
Many spectators and die heart fans of South Korea's Olympic figure skater Kim Yuna are devastated to hear the results of the results of the Sochi 2014 Olympics Women's Figure Skating Competition with Yuna receiving the silver medal. Some are skeptical of Adelina Sotnikova's gold after viewing Yuna's "cleaner and more polished" program. What are your thoughts on this?
Why cant Yulia Lipnitskaya and Adelina Sotnikova just come down the memorial for a three way meet?
Russia’s Adelina Sotnikova put in a sensational free skate on Thursday to *** the Sochi Olympic Gold Medal away from Kim Yuna and deny the South Korean back-to-back titles.

A well deserved win for Adelina Sotnikova in the Olympic Women's Figure Skating. I think perhaps she was able to perform better as all the pressure was on Yulia Lipnitskaya. It was nice to see Carolina Kostner get the bronze too. Polina Edmunds of the USA will surely be one to watch in the future.
Yulia Lipnitskaya and Adelina Sotnikova! you are the best x AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL of course
YES! GOLD in the ice skating,Adelina Sotnikova!!! The first ladies Gold Medal in Russian history! Yes! Also congrats to Carolina Costner with her bronze medal! P.s. Thank you to Yulia Lipnitskaya,yes,5 place, but anyway well done, girl, don't be upset, you have a great future!
Oh my God! I can't believe it! Another Gold Medal for Russia! Adelina Sotnikova was superior! Kim Yuna was awesome too! Unfortunately Yulia Lipnitskaya didn't show her best, but I believe she will go far!:)
Really doubt about Adelina Sotnikova's score :( Yulia Lipnitskaya is better than her tho.

Kim Yu Na's short program in the Women's Figure Skating was delicious and artistic -- she skated to that melancholic music, Send in the Clowns, and Na's demeanor was so much in resonance with the music. It was disappointing to watch the young Russian, Yulia Lipnitskaya, stumble, but kudos to another Young Russian, Adelina Sotnikova, and the persevering Italian, Carolina Kostner.
Ladies free skating. Good luck to our girls Yulia Lipnitskaya and Adelina Sotnikova! Fingers crossed!
Countdown until the performance of the Russian figure skaters. We all Praying for Adelina Sotnikova and Yulia Lipnitskaya!
My ladies Figure Skating prediction: Yuna Kim will win, defending her 2010 title from Vancouver and becoming only the 3rd lady to ever win back-to-back titles in ladies Figure Skating; Carolina Kostner of Italy and Adelina Sotnikova of Russia will both falter under pressure of knowing they are within striking distance of gold, the scores being so close going into the free skate.. allowing 15-year-old Russian "looks-like-she's-10" Yulia Lipnitskaya, to redeem herself, possibly even surpassing Yuna's free skate score, but coming in second due to entering the free skate 9 points back. U.S. National Champ Gracie Gold will skate flawlessly under pressure, coming in third, behind Yuna Kim and Lipnitskaya...

Girls, so many surprises in the short program! Epic skates from Yuna Kim, Gracie Gold, Polina Edmunds, Ashley Wagner and Adelina Sotnikova. Good luck to you all.
Loved watching the women's singles Olympic Figure Skating short program tonight. Yuna Kim skated beautifully and her performance moved me with her golden sparkly outfit in first place; Adelina Sotnikova of Russia is in second place and Carolina Kostner of Italy is in third place skating to Ave Maria in her shimmering blue outfit; very moving performance. Then there is Gracie Gold, the US Women's Figure Skating champion in 4th and Yulia Lipnitskaya of Russia in 5th, who is a new, young rising star. Japan's Mao Asada ended up in 16th place with a fall on her triple axel; surprising change in placing. Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond finished 13th. I saw her skate this morning live before going to work. Very exciting to watch. Tmr is the long program. Cannot wait!
Wow. Adelina Sotnikova actually did out perform Yulia Lipnitskaya. Very strong competition in the Ladies Short Program. Yuna Kim with Judy Collins "Send in the Clowns"?? Gag. Awful music. Ashley Wagner with Pink Floyds "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" - AWESOME!! Carolina Kostner with "Ave Maria" - simply beautiful. Good night at the Olympics! Oh yeah - Ted Ligety in Giant Slalom - great!!
Russsia gave Adelina Sotnikova to unreasonable high grades,is trying to steal the gold from Yuna-Kim ..
The ladies' short program ended with Yuna Kim, Adelina Sotnikova and Carolina Kostner in the lead in the Sochi Olympics.
