David Huntwork President Obama and DEMOCRATS have recently told us that even the most draconian of gun laws must be passed because “If we save even one life from gun violence, it’s worth it.” While that’s an amazingly ignorant, infantile, and even downright silly statement, it does neatly sum up a nanny-state philosophy that is fueling a nationwide assault on the second “shall not be infringed” amendment as well as law-abiding gun owners across the nation.

On This Day: 1623 - The first alcohol temperance law in the colonies was enacted in Virginia. The U.S. had flirted with various kinds of temperance until Prohibition became the law from 1920 to 1933. The effects of 20th century prohibition was a steep rise in organized crime, corruption and a withering of respect for the law as otherwise upright citizens became customers of gangster run speak-easies where they could purchase bathtub gin. Prohibition put too many people on the wrong side of the law to be effective… maybe there’s a lesson there concerning our treatment of pot.

As I see a plethora of programs rolled out to address how we incessantly compromise "lack" in schools, society and the workplace, it is amazing that we "choose" to condone poor behavior. It makes us weak, and vulnerable in a more and more competitive world. And it cheapens values, while setting the stage for eventual failure. And these wonderful programs always sidestep the main issue- poor actions should beget consequence, but for some reason the opposite is quite true. And excuses are made, and worse, accepted. Where is this seen? Everywhere. Business: a gent recently stated, "the day you have a human resources department is the day when termination becomes impossible". Small business thankfully can avoid keeping dead weight. But large businesses can only absorb those that aren't filtered thru the screening process. Education: do the excuses ever stop? Their author of choice was Dr. Seuss, and the celebration – Read Across America – was a national observation of the renowned author’s birthday. I reluctantly have to appreciate the intent of the prez to improve wages across America, but raising minimum wage is not the way, in my opinion. I can think of lots of places that I or my family enjoys where most of the staff is making minimum wage (like Lagoon) but if wages must go up, then I assume ticket prices will go up as well. And I will have to work a bit harder to enjoy that service, because my wages will not go up because of the increase. So, an increase in minimum wage is ultimately going to hurt everyone, and as well intentioned as the President is with this suggestion, it will only damage the value of the dollar.
